Today is Bessie Coleman's 125th Birthday. Bessie Coleman was an American civil aviator. She was the first African American woman (of record) to hold a pilot license and an international pilot license. The summer program began with an orientation for parents and students on June 14, 2016. During the month long institute, the high school students invested time in exploring careers available within the transportation field. Activities were designed to enhance leadership, teamwork, and career development skills, as well as providing students with an introduction to college life. At the conclusion of the program on July 19th, a celebration luncheon was given for the students inviting community members, dignitaries, project partners, and family members. The numerous activities of the 2016 KCSTI are shown in detail below.
