I’ve been using this exercise with my students a lot lately because it helps them learn how to transfer the weight of the arm all the way to the fingertip.
1. Check that the hand, wrist, and arm are aligned.
2. Balance on the fingertip.
3. Press firmly into the fingertip, but not so hard that the first knuckle collapses.
4. Repeat with fingers 2–5.
5. Try playing a short exercise on the piano while keeping that same feeling of weight at the fingertip.
Helpful analogies I’ve found are pressing a chocolate chip into a cookie or gently squishing a marshmallow.
If you try this exercise, I’d love to know if it helps!
