Oakwood
3410 Laird Avenue
The local architectural firm, Trend and Associates, designed this one-story school in the Oakwood neighborhood which housed kindergarten through sixth grade. In addition to classrooms, it also had a library, rooms for music, speech and art and a covered play area which could be converted to additional classrooms. It closed in June of 2003 and now is the site for programs including Multilingual Learners parenting classes, the district clothing closet and food pantry and Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency’s Youth Advancement Academy.

West Main School Professional Development Center
1627 West Main Street
The growth of the west side of Kalamazoo led to the opening of West Main School near this site in 1914. Twelve years later saw the completion of this structure which contained seven classrooms, an auditorium and a branch library. Eventually it received two additions but closed in 1980 due to factors including declining enrollment. For the next twenty years different agencies leased the building. In 2003, work was done to create the West Main Professional Development Center providing offices and training space for KPS teachers and administrators.
