We educate parents and caregivers on safe sleep for infants which includes room sharing but not bed sharing, nothing in a crib except the baby and a sleep sack. We urge against sleep positioners, bumper pads, and blankets as all of these items can cause a suffocation risk. We also educate on how to REDUCE the risk of SIDS although there is no way to know which babies will be vulnerable to SIDS but we do know that creating a safe sleep environment does help decrease the risk. Today I get to write as a grandma. Today is Neveah's 16th angelversary, and I still miss her like crazy. Some days more, and some days less. Neveah passed away 16 years ago from positional asphyxia, a result of bedsharing. As a grandma, I have always wondered why I never knew this was unsafe. My own kids slept on couches, and they slept in adult beds with me at times. Then, when Neveah died, I learned all the dangers. It took time, but I learned so much about safe sleep. Because how could I do nothing? How could she just have passed away in vain? This is why I choose to educate on safe sleep. Today, we remember Neveah. My precious granddaughter.
