After the assault stopped, the affidavit says, Austin McCollum told his wife to clean herself up and hide the blood.
Court documents filed Monday lay out what deputies say happened at the Bentonville home of the state representative and Republican nominee for Benton County judge early Saturday morning.
According to the probable cause affidavit, McCollum argued with his wife after the couple arrived home, threw items around a bedroom and struck her with a clothes hanger. When she said she wanted to sleep in another room, he blocked the door and refused to let her leave.
He then threw her face down on the bed and drove his knee into the back of her neck, restricting her airway, the affidavit states. When she broke free and reached the door, he slammed it on her hand and injured two fingers, punched her in the face and split open her brow, then threw her to the floor, grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head against the ground repeatedly.
Another family member in the house called 911.
Deputies reported McCollum was intoxicated when they arrived and refused to give a statement. They noted blood on his legs and arms and injuries to his knuckles.
The sheriff's office asked for a $25,000 bond. A judge set it at $10,000. McCollum was released Sunday under a no-contact order and is due back in court Sept. 8.
Formal charges have not been filed. He has no prior criminal record.
McCollum, 35, has served in the Arkansas House since 2017. Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Attorney General Tim Griffin, U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, U.S. Rep. Steve Womack and Lt. Gov. Leslie Rutledge have all called on him to resign and drop out of the race.
