Tennessee just became the first state in the country to require firearm safety education in public schools.

And before anybody jumps to conclusions, this isn’t about teaching kids how to shoot.

The new requirement focuses on basic safety: what a student should do if they encounter a firearm, including not touching it, leaving it alone and telling an adult.

Supporters say it’s about recognizing a reality many Tennessee families already understand: fi****ms are present in homes across our state, and knowing what NOT to do around one could save a life.

Others will undoubtedly have questions about whether firearm safety belongs in the classroom at all.

Either way, Tennessee is breaking new ground with this approach.
