Today our scholars stepped back nearly a thousand years — into the scriptorium.

Dr. Katherine Baker, assistant professor of art history at Arkansas State University, joined us to walk our students through the medieval art of bookmaking, from raw material to illuminated page. She showed how monks and scribes turned animal skin into parchment and vellum, how a scroll gave way to the codex, and how scribes mixed their own inks and ground pigments for illumination — the painted and gilded decoration that made a book not just a text but a treasure.

It was the perfect complement to what our scholars have already been doing in art class: making their own paper by hand and illuminating their own initials, just as medieval scribes once did.

At All Saints Classical Lutheran School, we don't just talk about history — we let our students touch it, make it, and understand why beauty and craftsmanship mattered to those who copied and preserved the written word for a thousand years before the printing press. The book in your hands has a story behind it, and today our students got to live a small piece of that story.
