Every moment on the court or field plays a role in a student athlete’s development. As Dr. Jon Skidmore highlights, young athletes are constantly engaging in three essential processes:

1. Discovery: Uncovering new skills, physical capabilities, and passions through sports.
2. Mastery: Building confidence by developing fundamentals like hitting a ball off a tee or learning to dribble a basketball.
3. Meaning: Creating positive experiences and mental connections that shape how they approach challenges and growth.

As parents, coaches, and mentors, our role is to support this journey. We must guide young athletes as they build skill, resilience, and a positive mindset on and off the court.

When watching your athlete practice or play, take a moment to reflect:
🏀 What is my child discovering today?
🏀 What process of mastery are they working through?
🏀 What meaning are they creating from this experience?

How do you help your athlete focus on growth and mastery during their season? Share your thoughts in the comments!

“Your child’s journey and how they navigate the challenges of life, the pleasures and the pain, is something that is going to be following them throughout their entire lives.” - Dr. Jon Skidmore.

Youth sports offer an opportunity for your child to build resilience, confidence, discipline, and the mindset to handle both success and setbacks.

Whether your child is preparing for the upcoming season, getting ready for tryouts, or simply looking to build a stronger foundation, our Basketball Basics series is the perfect place to sharpen skills while developing the character that helps young athletes thrive in sports and in life.

Before kids become great athletes, they need to know “why” they’re playing.

Dr. Jon Skidmore, performance psychologist, sits down with Jermel President to explore one of the most important questions in youth sports: What is your “why”?

Is it to win trophies? Make your parents proud? Or is it something deeper like building confidence, developing as a player and becoming a great teammate.

We believe sports are about so much more than the scoreboard. It’s about discovering purpose, developing character, and building a strong foundation.

When young athletes understand their why, they don’t just become better players. They become stronger people.
