The greatest drum wisdom ever dropped on me as a young drummer in search of my own sound was this…
When you hear Ringo, you know it is Ringo. When you hear Neil Peart, you know it is Neil Peart. When you hear Vinnie Colaiuta, you know it is him. When you hear most drummers play, you should be able to hear where they came from.
The goal is not to hide your influences. It is to digest them so completely that what comes out the other side is unrecognizably yours 🥁
