Frederick High FFA Team Earns Silver at National Convention

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Frederick High School FFA Agricultural Communications Team earned a Silver rating at the 2025 National FFA Convention held last week in Indianapolis. Team members Alivia Waugaman, Autumn Manahan, Maden Schimel, and Lauren Fulmer represented Frederick High and the state of Maryland in one of the organization’s most competitive national events.

The Agricultural Communications Career Development Event (CDE) is designed to strengthen students’ skills in media, public relations, and advocacy for agriculture. Participants are tasked with developing a complete media communications plan for FFA New Horizons magazine. Their projects include writing a feature story, designing a magazine layout, producing a broadcast segment, and crafting a comprehensive social media strategy.

In addition to the team project, competitors complete individual components such as a writing mechanics exam and participate in a simulated press conference. The event is structured to mirror a real-world newsroom environment, requiring students to collaborate under deadlines to produce professional-level communications materials.

“The Agricultural Communications event gives students practical experience in writing, design, broadcast production, and digital media,” said Britt Sentelle, Frederick High’s FFA advisor. “These are essential skills that prepare them for a wide range of careers in agricultural communications and beyond.”

By earning a Silver rating on the national stage, the Frederick High team demonstrated exceptional teamwork, creativity, and professionalism — continuing the school’s tradition of excellence in FFA competition.

🏆 2025-2026 Golden Owl Award Nomination Form 🏆

🦉 Presented by Maryland FFA, Nationwide, and Maryland Farm Bureau, the Golden Owl Award aims to recognize outstanding agricultural educators across Maryland through their work in guiding and empowering the next generation of agriculturists.

✍️ Students, fellow teachers and other supporters can nominate their favorite agricultural teacher and summarize what makes him or her the best in the state.

🥇 Nominees have an opportunity to win the title of Maryland Agricultural Educator of the Year and great cash prizes for their school’s ag program.

🚨 Nominations are due October 31st, 2025.
