I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since my epic backpacking trip to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I never would have made it through those 45 miles over three days without the camaraderie of my amazing friend, Katie.

I finally got the story of our trip into a readable length… and synced up our hiking and kayaking footage to a beautiful piece for flute and piano called Divinities at Dawn by Eric Ewazen.

This nature music experience is available on my website (https://www.katiedancer.com/blog/pictured-rocks-national-lakeshore-hiking-kayaking-adventure) and also in two of my upcoming live Flute Journey Concerts. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

This past academic year, I had the honor of mentoring and coaching Lily as she prepared for graduate school auditions.

It was an arduous process, but she came in each week with a fierce, open courage to go after her big dream: obtaining a master's degree in flute, so that she can share her love of flute music with her students.

We spent hours and hours on all of the audition materials - but we dug deeper to some more fundamental layers:

We worked together on mindset, body awareness , and - MOST importantly - remembering WHY we play flute music in the first place.

As a flutist, it's so easy to get lost in all of the challenging repertoire and impressive technique and forget about why we are torturing ourselves trying to play this instrument.

I know I need constant reminders to return to my why... and encouraged Lily to do the same.

For me, it's to express feelings and experiences I can't otherwise communicate. It's healing for me and those who listen.

For Lily, it's the pure joy she feels while she's playing each particular piece.

What about you? If you are a musician - what was the first thing that hooked you in?

I'd love to hear about it in the comments.

Do you need a breather? We've suffered some big blows around here lately, and I need a little fresh air.

Come along with me as I hike through the incredible landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, share what these giant trees taught me, and connect it to an ethereal piece of flute music.

It is way past time to brag on my awesome student, Amelia!

I've had the honor of teaching this wonderful lady for two years, and it has been such a joy to watch her grow! Amelia adores music and puts in the practice she needs to play the pieces she loves. Whether it's a duet, a pop song, or a featured solo in the marching band, Amelia's ready for it! (Also, she just stepped up to a new flute - so there's no stopping her now!)

If you are a flute player in mid-Missouri who wants to improve your skill level, I've opened up a few spots in my studio for someone just like you. Comment below or send me a DM and I will be in touch.

Earlier this summer, I had the honor of debuting my newest Flute Journey concert at Mizzou for the brilliant students of the Missouri Scholars Academy! Many thanks my dear friend and MSA teacher, Tina Casagrand for the invite and coordination!

This was my first time using my looping pedal and improvising for an audience - and my first time performing an entire concert for a group of high school students.

The looping and improv went over great - and the students were thoughtful, inquisitive, and genuinely interested in the stories and music I shared… which completely blew me away.

Here are a few snippets from the concert - but keep an eye out in the coming weeks for some new full-length Flute Journey videos and stories… I can’t wait to share them with you. :)

Music in the videos:
Kings of the Sky & Northern Lights by Melissa Keeling
Divinities at Dawn & Mist by Eric Ewazen
Great Train Race by Ian Clarke

It's time to brag on my flute student, Logan!

This girl finished her senior year strong with a Superior Gold rating on her solo at State Music Festival and then played 2 solos AND a trio on our Spring Studio Recital in May! It has been such an honor to help Logan grow as a flutist during her high school years - and such a treat to see her reap the benefits of all of her diligent, daily practice.

Though it's bummer to say goodbye as my students graduate and move on, I know Logan has the tools she needs to enjoy playing her flute for a lifetime.

If you are at the beginning of your flute journey (or anywhere in the middle!) and are looking for someone to help you grow into a new level of playing - please reach out. I have a few spots in my studio waiting for a student just like you. 🎶

Earlier this summer, I was invited to represent The Missouri Symphony - MOSY at the Les Bourgeois Vineyards A-Frame for their Summer Music Series…

And for a glorious (and hot!) hour and a half, I serenaded the crowd with jazz, pop, and movie music. I even got to share a few pieces from my latest Flute Journey Concert that included alto flute and my new effects pedal!

I love playing in these non-traditional venues because I get to feel more connected to the audience and feel their energy as I play.

And who doesn’t love hearing jazz flute by the river?

At one point, a couple of little ones joined me on the stage to dance along to the music. They are always so fascinated to watch me play the flute… it brings me so much joy!
