Zeke loves to draw. One of the easiest ways to engage him in learning is through drawing! Apraxia makes it hard to write, so we keep writing to a minimum and tap into his drawing skills instead! This allows him to have a hands on component alongside listening and spelling on the letter boards.

Homeschooling a speller is SUCH a can of worms of questions. 😂

How do we do this?
What DO we do all day?
How much should be spelling? Academics? Motor?
Do I really need a curriculum?

And honestly, this is exactly WHY I created Dare to Homeschool.

Because homeschooling a speller is about so much more than finding the “right” curriculum.

It’s about creating a rhythm that gives your child opportunities to work on spelling, communication, motor planning, regulation, independence, life skills AND real, age-appropriate academics.

That’s what I mean when I say our curriculum is truly built for spellers.

Inside the units there are opportunities to listen to audiobooks, match, draw, craft, do word searches, work on fine motor skills, learn interesting content, move, practice intentional motor skills, and — most importantly — SPELL.

And it’s not about doing ALL of it.

It’s about having enough options and flexibility that you can meet your child where they are right now.

In our house, Zeke’s school day doesn’t look like hours and hours of sitting at a table doing curriculum. We mix independent work, movement and motor work, academics, spelling, and time working directly with me. The curriculum is part of the framework — not the entire day.

And I think that distinction matters SO much.

We also know not every speller is ready for our curriculum yet, or even needs the same kind of curriculum. Maybe you need help figuring out where to start. Maybe you need a different math program, a typing option, or help building a realistic daily rhythm.

That’s exactly why our coaching program exists too.

I’m sharing more about all of this — including what Zeke’s actual homeschool day looks like — because I know how overwhelming it can feel when you’re trying to figure out where academics, spelling, motor work, and LIFE are all supposed to fit.

Homeschooling on a Sunday?! Because we have so many medical and therapy appointments each week, we homeschool year round AND I spread our work out over 6 days of the week. Each day I homeschool 2-3 out of 4 kids, aiming for 3-4 days per week per kid. It’s an art, not a science, but it keeps us moving and gives us plenty of bandwidth for days that just aren’t cut out to be homeschool days. It’s the beauty of homeschooling, we can make it what works for US, not for others.

How do you make homeschooling work for YOU?

“Family school” has become our favorite moments of the week over here. 2 of my kiddos have autism, and the image of all 4 kids sitting nicely that you see in this picture are few and far between. But when they do happen, it’s almost always in family school!

So, what is family school exactly? Well, it started out as an experiment for my sanity. I can’t teach each individual child math, LA, history, science, and electives. No one is independent enough to hand off their work. So, I decided to combine everyone for history, science, literature, and electives.

Now we do:
Morning baskets (games, art, etc)
Dare to Move (a daily movement calendar available in our Foundations subscription)
US history (using units in our Explorations membership and units from Gather Round )
Science (from Science Unlocked and units from our Explorations membership)
Literature - read alouds the whole crew can enjoy.

We choose a few things from that list to tackle each day, and it has been such a game changer.

In addition each kiddo completes a math and language arts lesson with me each day, as well as some reading practice (for my typical kids) and spellers practice for my spelling kids!

Everyone also has a couple “on your own” tasks each day. Some examples are:
Typing (touch type read and spell)
Listen to an audiobook
Workout on the Nex Playground

By combining everyone for “family subjects” we’ve been able to shorten our school days and also grow as a family. It doesn’t always look like this picture. There are days when my oldest sits in the other room and just listens. There are days when my youngest is in bed. And there are days where they fight and it’s chaos. But showing up and working together as a team to complete school work has been good for us all and takes some of the weight off of me.

Do you homeschool multiple kids? How do YOU set up your day so that it’s successful for your spellers and typical kids?

I built the thing I kept wishing existed. ❤️

For years, I’ve pieced together curriculum, adapted lessons, and tried to make traditional homeschool resources work for students who spell to communicate.

Now, Foundations and Explorations are both officially available!

Foundations gives speller families a clear starting point with movement, math, language arts, weekly plans, video lessons, hands-on activities, spell lessons, and parent support.

Explorations is an open-and-go history, science, and literature membership with rich unit studies, Book Club units, educational videos, hands-on activities, and spell lessons connected to the topic.

For a limited time, use code MEMORIAL50 for 50% off your first month.

Courses also include a 3-day free trial, so you can take a look inside first.
