The Med School Wife. Navigating the other side of med school before, during, and after. Premed tips, Hey there! Thanks for stopping by! Join us!

Check out my blog and like my page as I write about navigating the other side of med school. A lot of people talk about the rigors of med school, but forget there is often a family at home going through the same thing. With tasty recipes, fun date ideas, and facing challenges head on, we are finding joy in the little moments one test at a time.

🎓 Graduation is almost here—and so is an important deadline.

As residency and fellowship come to an end, physicians often have a limited window—typically around 90 days—to secure Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) disability insurance. No medical underwriting. No exams. Guaranteed coverage.

I'm so grateful we secured our GSI policy early—because we know that with Blade’s health history, he would not have qualified through the traditional route. That decision brought invaluable peace of mind.

✨Your ability to earn is your greatest asset. Protect it before the countdown expires.

If you're interested or have any questions, I would love to make an introduction to the agent we worked with Michael Kittner at Money Meets Medicine Disability Insurance. He's fantastic and was so easy to work with. Big bonus that he understands this crazy medical life since he's married to a physician.

They may not understand all of it yet—
but they feel it.

The long days.
The missed moments.
The time away.

And somehow, even after all of that…
you still show up for them.
You still show up for us.

One day they’ll understand the why behind it all—
the lives you’ve touched and the sacrifices you made.

And they’ll know how lucky they are to call you theirs 🤍

Happy National Doctors’ Day

Sometimes love looks like flowers and big gestures, but more often it's the little things.

Like when your surgical resident husband brings home leftovers from the fancy dinner he went to for work because he thought of you.

And honestly… it totally made my day. 🥡❤️
It really is the little things.

Follow along for more life with a surgical resident.

The night before Match Week always brings us back to this moment.

Matching into general surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida changed the course of our lives in ways we never could have imagined.

To everyone waiting this week — we’re thinking of you. The road here isn’t always straight, but your story is still unfolding. 🤍

As a resident spouse, I know how much is riding on one thing—their ability to practice.

Many residents don't realize you can often secure disability insurance through a Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) program during training. That typically means:
✅No medical exam
✅No health questions
✅Locked-in rates while you're young
✅Coverage that protects your future earning potential

It's one of the few financial decisions that's actually easier to make in residency than after.

If you're not sure where to start, we personally worked with Michael Kittner at and had a great experience. He's also married to medicine which makes a difference when someone truly understands this stage of life. Happy to connect you if you want to learn more.

Residents, fellows, and medical spouses protect what you're working this hard for.

— In April 2021, Blade was diagnosed with not one, but two cancers, right in the middle of his third year of medical school. An aggressive melanoma—and then, on follow-up PET scan, thyroid carcinoma.

At 28, with two young kids, it was the last curveball we ever expected. Both cancers were surgically removed. Then came six rounds of immunotherapy and the many complications that followed.

Fast-forward to intern year of residency: another melanoma appeared, and it was removed by one of the very attendings Blade now works alongside.

We once shared part of Blade’s cancer journey in a four-part series on my website, though life got busy before we finished it. One day, we will.

I remain in awe of my determined, resilient husband—now cancer-free on his most recent scan—who pushed through it all, graduated medical school, and is now a surgeon at Mayo Clinic Florida, caring for patients walking through their own cancer journeys.

I can’t help but see God’s hand in every step—knowing what Blade would face, placing the right surgeons and oncologists in his path, and preparing him to now care for others facing the same life-altering diagnoses.

Proof that even the hardest chapters can shape purpose—and that healing sometimes comes full circle.

Save this. Share it with your med spouse. Have the conversation.

Following up on my reel because this question deserved another look.

✨What happens if a surgeon can't operate?

An injury, pregnancy complication, chronic pain, or burnout can pause income overnight-sometimes for months or longer.

That's where disability insurance has given me peace of mind.
Disability insurance isn't about fear. It's about protecting your biggest asset-your ability to earn an income. Plus, the years you've already invested and the future you're building.

If your hands are your paycheck, this matters more than most people realize.

Don't put it of. You'll thank yourself later.

If you have questions, my DMs are always open. I'm happy to share our experience and connect you with the disability insurance agent we worked with at Money Meets Medicine Disability Insurance

Modifications aren't a step back they're how you stay consistent. Post-surgery looks different, but showing up still counts.

Grateful for a community that meets you where you are and keeps you moving forward.

If you're modifying for any reason right now, know this: you belong here too.
Strong looks different in every season.
