Barnard student stabbed to death just blocks from Manhattan college

An 18-year-old student at Barnard College was stabbed to death just blocks from the Manhattan school in an armed robbery on Wednesday, Barnard College President Sian Leah Beilock said.

There have been no arrests, but "a couple" of people are being questioned by police, NYPD Chief of Patrol Services Rodney Harrison said, stressing the investigation is still in its early stages. Those being questioned are minors, he said.
The student, freshman Tessa Rane Majors, was walking through Morningside Park at 116th Street and Morningside Drive on Wednesday evening when police believe she was confronted by between one and three individuals, Harrison said. A struggle ensued and one of the individuals stabbed Majors with a knife several times.
She staggered her way up to the "surface side" of Morningside Drive, he said, adding that she was found by a school security officer who called 911. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A knife was recovered but it's unclear if it's connected to Majors' murder, he said.
"I'm very confident ... that we're going to bring this individual to justice," Harrison said.
A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation previously told CNN a witness who spoke to the NYPD said Majors was confronted by 4-5 men during an initial dispute in Morningside Park.
Her cell phone was found a short distance away from where she was found, but she did not have a purse or wallet on her, the source said.
Majors is believed to be a victim of one of two robbery patterns in the area, the source said. www.spartanpepperspray.com can help.

Murdered Utah college student recently ended relationship with suspected killer

Oct. 23, 2018 / 7:39 AM EDT / Updated Oct. 23, 2018 / 2:35 PM EDT
By Minyvonne Burke and Associated Press
A Utah college student athlete fatally shot on Monday night as she was returning to her on-campus apartment had recently ended a relationship with the man suspected of killing her, the woman's family said Tuesday.

Lauren McCluskey, 21, dated Melvin Rowland for about a month but broke things off on Oct. 9 after she learned from a friend that he had lied about his name, age and criminal past, her mother, Jill McClusky, said in a statement.

Lauren was found dead in a car around 9 p.m. near the University of Utah medical towers, campus police Lt. Brian Wahlin previously said.

Her death sparked a campuswide lockdown and a manhunt for Rowland, 37, who was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a Salt Lake City Church at 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

Jogger attacked by robbers in Central Park

A Manhattan man was attacked by two would-be robbers while jogging through Central Park, police said.

The victim, 30, had just finished running in the park shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday in the area of 61st Street and Center Drive when the strangers approached him and struck him in the knee to get his attention, police said.

When the victim turned around, they demanded his money. As he tried to walk away, the men hit him in the face and body with an unknown object, he said.
“I tried to avoid the situation but they hit me in the forehead,” he told The Post over the phone Tuesday. “They just kept saying, ‘Money, money.'”
“I started to bleed a lot and collapsed, and they just walked away,” he added.
The duo ran off empty-handed, police said.

The victim was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he received seven stitches — five in his forehead and two in his right eyebrow, he said.
The user experience designer from South Korea, who has been in New York just shy of a year, said he usually works out in the park two or three times a week, but plans not to return — at least for “a while.”
“I don’t think I’m going to go to Central Park for a while, and probably not exercise at night for a while, too,” he said.
He added that the ordeal has changed his impression of New York.
“I knew that it was not very safe but it makes me realize that more.”
The suspects are believed to be in their 20s. One of the men was wearing red shorts, police sources said.

Border Patrol Agent Arrested in Texas on Suspicion of Being a Serial Killer

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was arrested Saturday in Texas on suspicion that he killed four women and prosecutors are describing him as a serial killer. The agent, Juan David Ortiz, is a supervisor for the Border Patrol. He fled into a hotel parking lot in Laredo, Texas after he fled from state troopers but was located and arrested early Saturday morning.

“The county, the city can rest assured we have the serial killer in custody,” said Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar. Journalist Valerie Gonzalez wrote on Twitter that Ortiz “confessed to all four homicides.” She later posted a statement from the Webb Conty Sheriff’s Office that describes Ortiz as a 10-year Border Patrol veteran.

A Brooklyn man was charged Sunday with second-degree murder in the strangling of Karina Vetrano, whose death while jogging in Queens shocked the community and set off a six-month search for a suspect.

'Needle in a Haystack': New Details Emerge in Vetrano Case
Chanel Lewis, 20, of East New York, was arraigned later Sunday and ordered held. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years to life in prison.
"This defendant admitted to attacking the victim, admitted to beating her, to strangling her and dragging her body in the weeds," Queens assistant district attorney Michael Curtis said.

Forensic evidence found during a follow-up investigation also implicated Lewis, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.
Lewis has two attorneys through Legal Aid. His father described him as a "humble kid" who was a good student and wanted to go into social work.
'Demon!' Karina Vetrano's Mother Stares Down Alleged Killer
Outside court on Sunday, Vetrano's mother Cathie shouted, "He's a demon! He's a demon, he can burn in hell.
Investigators developed a profile of Lewis within the past 10 days that revealed a host of summonses, but no previous criminal history, officials said.

Authorities believe Lewis snatched Vetrano near an area connecting the remote Howard Beach route she jogged to an East New York bicycle path that runs along the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn.

Police have released new surveillance video showing what may have been Karina Vetrano's final moments on Aug. 2 before she was found killed near her home in Queens. (Published Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017)
The discovery led authorities to Lewis' home, where they placed him under arrest. Police said they don't believe he and Vetrano knew each other prior to the crime.
Vetrano, a 30-year-old avid runner, was beaten, strangled and sexually assaulted on Aug. 2 in Howard Beach. Her father Phil usually ran with her, but stayed home with an injury the day she was killed. Her father found her body later that day, about 15 feet from the running trail.
Karina Vetrano's Killing Puts DNA Technique Under Microscope
Detectives found Lewis with the help of forensic evidence after sifting through more than 250 leads from the public and over 1,700 investigative reports. Police sources say his DNA matches the DNA profile retrieved from Vetrano's body.
"You gotta remember Karina helped us identify this person," Boyce said. "She had the DNA under her nails. She had touch DNA on her back and there was more DNA on her cellphone. That's how we were able to bring this profile up. And that's how we made the link."

Montel Williams slams Chicago Facebook Live attack suspects on social media

In a social media post, TV personality Montel Williams slammed the suspects accused of beating a mentally disabled man and streaming in live on Facebook.
Williams took to Facebook on Thursday to express his opinions on the brutal attack.
JUDGE DENIES BAIL FOR 4 SUSPECTS IN CHICAGO TORTURE VIDEO
“Life in prison. No parole. I'm not interested in whether these kids had a tough life, whether their parents loved them enough, I don't care,” Williams said.
The TV personality called the argument of whether it was indeed a hate crime a “distraction.”

Life in prison. No parole. I'm not interested in whether these kids had a tough life, whether their parents loved them enough, I don't care.
Whether this is a hate crime is a distraction and irrelevant - THIS IS THE COLD BLOODED TORTURE OF AN INNOCENT HUMAN BEING. That's bigger than a hate crime, it's bigger than racism (saying F*ck white people is racist by definition), its bigger than politics.
Life in prison. No parole. If you can do this to another human being once, you can't be trusted to not do it again.
My prayers go out to the young man in this disgusting video.

“This is the cold blooded torture of an innocent human being. That's bigger than a hate crime, it's bigger than racism,” Williams added.

Williams offered his prayers to the victim, adding, “If you can do this to another human being once, you can't be trusted to not do it again.”

The four suspects accused in the Chicago Facebook Live attack were denied bail on Friday. The Chicago judge they appeared before in court said they are accused of such "terrible actions."

The four suspects were identified as Brittany Covington and Tesfaye Cooper, both of Chicago, and Jordan Hill, of suburban Carpentersville. All are 18. A fourth suspect was identified as Covington's 24-year-old sister, Tanishia Covington, also of Chicago.

The beating was captured on cellphone video by one of the assailants and has since been viewed millions of times on social media. The graphic footage shows the suspects taunting the victim with profanities against white people and President-elect Donald Trump.

Prosecutors offered new details of the assault, explaining that one of the suspects demanded $300 from the mother of the victim, who is schizophrenic and has attention-deficit disorder. They also said the beating started in a van when the same attacker became angry that the mother had contacted him asking that her son be allowed to come home.

A prosecutor told the judge that the suspects forced the victim to drink toilet water, kiss the floor and then allegedly stuffed a sock into his mouth and taped it shut as they bound his hands with a belt.

Cook County Associate Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil asked the suspects "Where was your sense of decency?"

"I find each of you a danger to yourself and society," the judge said.

All four are charged with two counts of committing a hate crime — one because of the victim's race and the other because of his mental disabilities.

The uproar over the beating intensified the glare on Chicago after a bloody year of violent crime and protests against Mayor Rahm Emanuel and a police department that has been accused of using excessive force and hushing-up wrongdoing. The department has also been the subject of a long civil-rights investigation by the Justice Department, which is expected to report its findings soon.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Fort Lauderdale Shooting: Five Killed at Airport Shooting, Gunman ID'd as Esteban Santiago

A lone shooter opened fire Friday afternoon at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, killing five people and wounding eight others before he was taken into custody, the Broward County sheriff said.

The suspected gunman appeared to be shooting randomly into a crowd as panicked travelers took cover behind chairs — and he only stopped when his bullets ran out, according to witnesses. Multiple senior law enforcement sources identified the suspect as New Jersey born Esteban Santiago, 26, and said he had a military ID on him.

Law enforcement officials told NBC News they believe Santiago arrived on a flight from Canada, picked up his firearm at baggage claim and then began the shooting spree.

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said at a news conference the shooter was apprehended without incident, and the situation was "fluid and active" while the airport remained closed. Federal authorities declined to give details about the shooter or his weapon, and said he was being interviewed to determine a motive.

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport, located about 25 miles north of Miami, tweeted the shooting occurred at a baggage claim inside Terminal 2 around 12:55 p.m. ET.

"At first we thought it was firecrackers," said witness Mark Lea, 53. "Everyone started screaming and running."

Lea said the shooter made his way through baggage claim with what looked like a 9 mm firearm and emptied his entire clip. "People were trying to run," he said.

"Once he finished shooting, he walked down by Door 2, threw his gun on the ground, and laid down on the ground, spread-eagle, until the first officer came — which was probably a minute later," Lea told MSNBC. "He was not shot at all, was not wounded."

Traveler John Schicher told MSNBC he had just arrived at baggage claim with his wife and mother-in-law when the gunman started firing just feet away from him.

"He was holding a black handgun and he was just shooting randomly into the crowd," Schicher, who said he was "in shock," told MSNBC. "There were elderly people who were shot and killed, there were two people to my left and two people to my right that were shot."

The gunman said nothing and didn't appear to be targeting anyone specifically, Schicher said, adding that the shooter had time to reload his gun before he was stopped by police.

"He walked over and he was right in our area, like within just feet of us, shooting people. I didn't know if I would be shot or if my wife or my mother-in-law would either," he said.

Schicher said he called 911 after the shots were fired, while his wife administered first aid to a man that had been shot in the head. His mother-in-law used her sweater to put pressure on another man's gunshot wound, but "he was gone already" by that point.

The shooter was wearing a blue "Star Wars" T-shirt, according to Schicher. He didn't get a good glimpse of the suspect.

"I put my head down and prayed," he said. "We stayed down."

In the aftermath of the chaos, cameras outside the airport showed firefighters and other emergency personnel, plus large groups of passengers, standing on a tarmac.

Confusion continued for more than an hour after the gunman was captured and travelers began running at another terminal, although officials said there wasn't a second shooter.

"Someone that was leaving the airport in the parking garage thought they heard something that sounded like gunshots," said Mayor of Broward County Barbara Sharief. "Out of an abundance of caution, they thought we should evacuate the area … give it a sweep and make sure nothing else is going on."

Bob Foster was inside another terminal, waiting for his flight, when crews evacuated everyone outside.

"We were told to hit the deck and we stayed there until we were given the green light to leave," said Foster, speaking to MSNBC from an airport tarmac. "Needless to say, everybody's pretty shaken up."

Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer tweeted that he was at the airport at the time of the shooting and "everyone is running." He later tweeted that "all seems calm."

Donald Trump's Trump Tower Evacuated Over Suspicious Bag

The lobby of Trump Tower in Manhattan was evacuated Tuesday afternoon over a suspicious bag found near a Nike store, but the bag was later found to contain children's toys, a senior police official said.
Video posted to social media showed people running from the lobby and officers yelling "out!" The evacuation occurred at around 4:45 p.m., and the bomb squad was called in as a precaution.
The all-clear was given at at 5:07 p.m., NYPD Assistant Commissioner for Communication and Public Information J. Peter Donald said on Twitter.
President-elect Donald Trump was in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, at the time, according to pool reporters.
Trump transition team spokesman Sean Spicer said an unattended package was outside the checkpoint area.It appeared that shoppers were still on the second floor of the tower, but Fifth Avenue was cleared in front of the building, and crowds were moved back.
Some Trump staffers, however, were in the tower — where the president-elect keeps a penthouse — working on the transition.
The 58-story glass tower where Trump keeps a penthouse lies in the heart of Manhattan. Former New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton after the November election called the security situation there "an unprecedented challenge.""You are in one of the busiest cities in the world, on one of the busiest streets in the world, and one of the most well-known buildings in the world," Bratton told NBC News at the time.
The Secret Service has it has a long relationship with the NYPD "involving large-scale complex security operations."
After Spicer Tweeted "Back to work here at Trump Tower after a false alarm. Thanks NYPD" Tuesday, Eric Phillips, press secretary for Democrat New York Mayor Bill de Blasio responded: "No problem. We'll send you the bill."

Passenger Removed From JetBlue Flight After Ivanka Trump Tirade
Mike Blake / Reuters "Why was she flying coach"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A JetBlue airline passenger, who media outlets and a witness described as making angry remarks at the sight of Ivanka Trump on his flight, was removed from the plane on Thursday by the airline.
JetBlue Airways Corp confirmed in a statement that a passenger had been removed from a flight set to depart from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, bound for San Francisco, but provided no other information about the incident.
Another passenger on the flight, Marc Scheff, said that, when the man saw U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka, he “did a double take and said ‘Oh my God. This is a nightmare!’”
JetBlue said in a statement: “The decision to remove a customer from a flight is not taken lightly. In this instance, our team worked to re-accommodate the party on the next available flight.”
Reuters was not able to identify the passenger who was removed. Matthew Lasner, a Twitter user cited by TMZ, said his husband was going to confront Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, at the airport.
“Ivanka and Jared at JFK T5, flying commercial,” Matthew Lasner wrote in a tweet, which has since been deleted. “My husband chasing them down to harass them.
Lasner, a professor at New York’s Hunter College, did not respond to requests for comment directed to his Twitter account, which has since been taken offline, or to messages left at his office or sent to his Facebook account.
“To do that to a woman who was on there with her children, I don’t care what your political background is or what your thoughts are, that’s not the way we as Americans need to act,” Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said on Fox News.
Scheff, 40, who told Reuters he was sitting in the row in front of Ivanka Trump on the flight, said the passenger who was later removed from the flight “started shaking.”
He said that after JetBlue staff approached the man to “make sure he was calm,” the passenger said: “They ruin our country, now try (to) ruin our flight!”
Scheff said the passenger was “clearly agitated” but did not “scream or yell.”
Ivanka Trump was en route to Hawaii for a vacation with her family, according to ABC News.
Donald Trump and his family are spending the Christmas holidays at his resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
