Music Therapy Education Now
Music therapy education & advocacy from students, interns and professionals
Yes. Music therapy is SO much fun. And being fun doesn’t make it any less scientific. 🎶❤️
Don’t make it harder than it has to be.
Music therapy is everywhere!
If it isn’t documented, it didn’t happen! ✍🏻
YES IT WOULD!
Music is our expertise, but we can always use other tools like play or conversation. We will work with your family member to find music that resonates, and if we can’t, we’ll reassess! Maybe what they need is to improvise sounds on a new instrument, discuss songs from their past, or make a playlist that supports how they feel today.
Unskippable cutscenes 😔😤 (all of these have happened to us or someone we know...)
What do you get when you mix a bachelors degree in music therapy, 1200+ clinical hours, proficiency in at least 4 instruments, a 6 month internship, and a board exam? Why, a board certified music therapist of course!! 🎨🎶

Thank you so much to Madeline Lockeby for joining us! In this episode, hear Madeline talk about the spiritual domain of music therapy. How can we use music to support the soul? And how is that different than supporting emotions?
Madeline Mary Lockeby is a board-certified music therapist based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A graduate of Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelor of Music Therapy, she has built a career integrating music and spiritual care. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Madeline served as Director of Worship Arts at a local church before joining Baton Rouge General Medical Center in 2022 for her music therapy internship. Following her internship, she earned 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education while working as a residential hospital chaplain, and is currently working towards an Associate Board Certified Chaplain certification. Madeline now serves as a part-time worship leader at a local church and a full-time music therapist at Baton Rouge General, where she specializes in behavioral health, oncology, intensive care, and palliative care. Her work reflects a deep commitment to the soul-keeping power of music and to offering compassionate support to those facing life's most challenging yet beautiful moments.

The hospital can be an uncomfortable, unfamiliar, and even scary place for pediatric patients. Patients have to undergo painful and/or frightening procedures. In music therapy sessions, patients make their own choices. Just the simple act of choosing to play the maraca over the tambourine can have a profound therapeutic benefit for a child. Board certified music therapists use music to support children with pain management, nausea management, procedure support, sleep, and many other health-related goals in pediatric hospitals. 🤍🏥🎶
We back up everything we say with evidence. We don’t write “Client was happy.” Instead, we say “Client presented with bright affect during active music making activity as evidenced by pointing to the tone chimes and smiling, laughing while playing the tone chimes, and staying engaged throughout intervention.”
Do you write “as evidenced by,” “A.E.B.,” or do you use another phrase? Let’s help each other! 💖
