Another High School Football Friday Night is upon us.
18-year-old Traie Brown of Verbena (AL) High School will be sitting in the press box tonight as his team hosts Zion Chapel.
He will wonder how it ended in a flash.
He will wonder how it came to this.
“Doctors have told Traie he will never be able to take part in any sport again,” Traie’s dad DeWayne told me.
“My son’s athletic career is over.”
Traie Brown is a big dude.
He’s 6-foot-2, 230 pounds.
He plays fullback and linebacker at Verbena High School.
He doesn’t mind being hit.
He doesn’t mind doling out hits, either.
It was such a freak play.
Days ago, Traie jumped skyward at practice going after the football.
He landed awkwardly, his teammate landing on top of him.
Traie Brown’s athletic career was over in a flash.
Traie landed on his left leg- his leg and his knee shattered.
“Traie broke his femur and he tore his ACL, MCL, PCL and LCL,” said Dewayne.
That wasn’t all.
Traie ripped his hamstring in two.
He tore his bicep and suffered drop feet- Traie can’t pick them up.
“Traie will undergo knee reconstruction surgery on September 18th,” dad DeWayne told me.
It’s going to be a long road for Traie Brown.
He will have a rod outside his leg after a total knee reconstruction.
Traie will now strive to get back to health and look to be strong enough to walk and live without sports.
As difficult as it is, Traie will take it.
I asked Traie how he is feeling the night before he heads to the press box and watches his teammates play football.
“Oh, I’m OK,” whispered Traie.
I wasn’t sure if I believed him.
