Evolution and the Fossil Record by John Pojeta, Jr. and Dale A. Springer For at least 300 years, scientists have been gathering the evidence for evolutionary change. Much of this vast database is observational, and the evidence came to light with the study of fossils (paleontology) and the rock record (geology). This essay focuses on the evidence about evolution from the...

Learn about the big bang and the physics of the universe.....what does that have to do with fossils? Find out at Museumoftheearth.org.........http://www.ted.com/talks/allan_adams_the_discovery_that_could_rewrite_physics?utm_source=newsletter_daily&utm_campaign=daily&utm_medium=email&utm_content=button__2014-04-01
The discovery that could rewrite physics On March 17, 2014, a group of physicists announced a thrilling discovery: the “smoking gun” data for the idea of an inflationary universe, a clue to the Big Bang. For non-physicists, what does it mean? TED asked Allan Adams to briefly explain the results, in this improvised talk illustrated by Randa...

Physical and chemical principles are unchanging and drive both gradual and
rapid changes in the Earth system
Earth processes (such as erosion, evolution, or plate tectonics) operating today are the
same as those operating since they arose in Earth history, and they are obedient to the
laws of chemistry and physics. Although the processes constantly changing the Earth are
essentially xed, their rates are not. Tipping points are reached that can result in rapid
changes cascading through Earth systems

Ammonites began life as tiny planktonic creatures less than 1mm in diameter. In their infancy they would have been vulnerable to attack from other predators, including fish; however, they quickly assumed a strong protective outer shell that shielded their soft interior from damage. Evidence suggests that they gained in size rapidly, with females growing up to 400% larger than the males.
Records of life in the past can tell us about the state of nature before human impacts and how life existed previously can inform conservation and restoration efforts by providing historical and baseline data.
