🎉 We hit 10 MILLION photos submitted to Snapshot NY! 📸

Thanks to our incredible community of volunteers, we've officially surpassed 10 million photos uploaded through the Snapshot NY website! We are working hard to pull out the images with wildlife in them, and run them through our DeepFaune program to assign species IDs! Every single image helps us better understand and protect New York's wildlife, and none of it would be possible without YOU.

To every volunteer, thank you! This milestone is yours as much as it is ours. 🐾🦊🦝

🐭 Wildlife Wednesday: White-Footed Mouse and Deer Mouse 🐭

This week's trail cam guest is a tiny one, and we're not 100% sure which species it is! The white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) and deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) look so similar that even wildlife biologists often need to examine them in hand (or check DNA) to tell them apart. Both have that classic white belly and feet with brown-to-gray fur on top, and their ranges overlap heavily across North America.

Fun facts about these look-alikes:
🐾 Both species are excellent climbers and can be found in trees, not just on the ground.
🦌 Deer mice get their name from their fur coloring, which resembles a white-tailed deer's coat.
🦠 White-footed mice are one of the primary reservoir hosts for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.
🐭 A single mouse can have several litters per year, with up to 6 pups each time
🌰 Both species cache food for winter, stashing seeds anywhere they can.
🌙 They're almost entirely nocturnal, and most trail camera images we get of them are at night!

Speaking of trail cameras - capturing a mouse on one is actually a pretty rare treat! Most trail cams are triggered by motion and heat, and these little guys are so small and quick that they often zip through the frame before the camera even fully triggers, or they're just too small to set it off at all. So this shot is a fun bit of luck!

Date: Thursday, August 20th, 2026
Start time: Arrive between 10:30am - 11:00am. Please account for traffic and time to park.
End time: Event should conclude by 2:00pm.
Location: Room G24 (ground level) Fernow Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca NY 14853.
Food: Lunch provided from Ithaca Bakery (vegetarian, gluten free, and vegan options included).
Parking: Parking permits will be sent to registrants via email for the Alumni field lot (n-lot) across from Fernow Hall.
