RE: Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Dear Parent(s)

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins announced late Thursday that five more people there have tested positive for the new coronavirus — and that one of them had no recent travel history.
The evidence of community spread of the virus in Dallas County prompted officials to declare a local disaster and put restrictions on gatherings that are set to go into effect at 11 a.m. Friday. The order will prohibit gatherings of 500 people or more, but officials said Thursday that they strongly recommend locals to generally avoid large gatherings and practice social distancing throughout the county. The order runs through March 20.

What is Coronavirus (COVID-19)?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, and now with this new virus (named SARS-CoV-2).
The SARS-CoV-2 virus is a betacoronavirus, like MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. All three of these viruses have their origins in bats. The sequences from U.S. patients are similar to the one that China initially posted, suggesting a likely single, recent emergence of this virus from an animal reservoir.

What are the symptoms of Coronavirus (COVID-19)?
The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.*
• Fever
• Cough
• Shortness of breath
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*:
• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
• Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
• New confusion or inability to arouse
• Bluish lips or face
*This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.

What should I do if I think my child has it?
If your child develops any of these symptoms bring him/her to your doctor for examination.

Can my child stay in crèche/preschool?
Your child can return to crèche/preschool when he/she has a medical release.

Can children pass on the virus and what measures need to be taken?
Just because children are not as likely to develop major symptoms, or even any at all, does not mean they won't contract the coronavirus. As news reports, it's likely that the number of cases in children is underreported, in part because their symptoms are so minimal or mild, be advised children can still infect others.

Children are incredibly efficient at spreading other respiratory viruses like influenza. Of course, this is a different virus and it could be different. But we assume that children are extremely efficient at spreading respiratory viruses, including the new Covid-19.

The biggest concern is that in small or large groups, children could still pass along the virus to those who are more susceptible -- including the elderly in the community or older family members.

So parents and children should take commonsense precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention including regular hand cleaning with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Children and family members should engage in preventative measures to guard against spreading the respiratory infection, including covering coughs and staying up to date on vaccinations, according to the CDC.

School closings may also become more regular as community members test positive for the coronavirus. That would be one form of social distancing, just like a travel restriction, which officials hope can help contain the spread of the disease.

Thank you for giving this your attention. Your family doctor will be able to answer any further questions that you might have.

Yours sincerely,

What Can You Do to Keep from Getting Sick?

While there is currently no vaccine to prevent 2019-nCoV infection, the good news is that child care providers may be already taking many important steps to prevent the spread of infection based on their day-to-day activities.

The CDC has special advice for business and employers, some of which will look familiar to child care providers:

Emphasize staying home when sick, respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene by all employees. You already know the importance of children and program staff washing their hands on a day-to-day basis. Keep this up! You can provide alcohol-based sanitizer (containing at least 60-95% alcohol) when soap and water isn’t available, but using soap and water to wash for at least 20 seconds is best. Also make sure children and adults are using proper coughing and sneezing techniques.
Actively encourage sick employees to stay home. We know it may be difficult to find substitute caregivers in a program, but it’s important to make sure that employees with symptoms are staying home and not coming to work and making others sick.
Environmental cleaning. This is second nature to providers and done regularly, so it is highly likely providers are already doing this. Making sure you are cleaning frequently touched surfaces is key! No additional disinfection (beyond routine cleaning) is recommended at this time, so providers are most likely already a step ahead of other businesses and workplaces.
Lastly, preparedness and planning are important. If you don’t already have a workplace emergency plan in place, now is the time to get moving. We want to make sure you and your staff are prepared for any type of emergency. There are some great considerations for business continuity and readiness, as well as how to create that plan available for Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R) agencies and for child care providers.
