Funded by a $3.50 per quarter “sustainability fee,” The Green Initiative Fund(TGIF) is a student-run funding board, housed under the Internal VP Office of ASUCI, for sustainable projects at UC Irvine. It is composed of six board members with voting power, and several interns. About $120,000 per academic year is available in grants for undergraduate students, organizations, or collaborations between organizations to apply for in the form of project proposals.

Project Spotlight: Solar Electric Bicycle (Fall 2018)

Solar electric bicycles incorporate the knowledge of sustainability and engineering, making bikes that generate electricity from solar power and mechanical power from pedaling. The specially designed bike has a solar panel, motor, and generator. People can use the bike electricity to charge their electronic devices as well. The bikes will be set up for demonstrations on campus.

Project Spotlight: Engineers for a Sustainable Water Nozzle (Fall 2018)

The water saving nozzle project aimed to design improved nozzles that would reduce water usage on campus. Students worked together to create the most optimal prototype with 3D printing, ultimately working towards pitching the product to be installed on campus.

Project Spotlight: Green Public Art at Mesa Court (Winter 2018)

This project invited students from The Claire Trevor school of the Arts to collaborate with Mesa Court and its residents. The goal was to divert plastic waste from residence halls to put on display through an art medium.
