Why are the migraine attacks around our periods such a predictable (and difficult) part of living with migraine?

Hint: It's not just one big drop in estrogen!

We deserve to know more about why our menstrual cycles have such a huge impact on our migraine attacks.

💡 In fact, the largest drop-off in estrogen occurs after ovulation. (That's day 14 - 19 of our cycle.)

‼️The highest window of migraine risk occurs later, before our period starts and during the first days of our period (days 27, 28, 1, 2, and 3.)‼️

What makes this second, smaller estrogen drop a more powerful migraine trigger? One reason is that it occurs at the same time as the largest progesterone drop-off the cycle.

If you learned something new from this post (like our community volunteers did!) - the education doesn't end here.

🧡Learn more about what is happening to cause migraine attacks, and strategies like "mini-prevention" to help stop menstrual migraine attacks from ever occurring.

What has been your experience with perimenopause and migraine?

Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause can trigger more frequent and burdensome migraine attacks, leaving many of us struggling. Managing migraine during perimenopause may require adjusting acute therapy, considering prevention options, and addressing factors such as sleep and stress. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be considered for managing vasomotor symptoms in migraine, but individual factors and risks should be evaluated. Lifestyle habits, such as maintaining hydration, managing caffeine intake, practicing mindfulness or meditation, and prioritizing sleep, can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.
