It’s one of the simplest pieces of equipment in water rescue, but there’s a lot that goes into using it effectively. Reading the current, choosing your position, managing the rope, and knowing what to do once someone grabs hold.

Give them the problem. Let them work through it. Let them communicate, adjust, and figure it out.

Because when the real call comes, the instructor won’t be standing beside them.

🚨 YOU’RE FIRST DUE. WHAT’S YOUR PLAN?

You’re dispatched for a person in the water after a kayak overturns.

When you arrive:

•One adult is stranded on a gravel bar approximately 60 feet from shore.
•A second person is unaccounted for and was last seen moving downstream.
•The current is fast with visible debris.
•The stranded victim is conscious and appears uninjured.
•You have trained personnel, PFDs, throw bags and rope on scene.
•Your boat team is approximately 20 minutes out.

What’s the water doing? Where are the hazards? Where are we going — and where could we end up if the plan changes?

Moving water can change the plan pretty quick. Taking a few minutes to read the water and know what you’re getting into matters.
