The Iowa Archeological Society (IAS) is once again offering a $1,000 student-oriented research grant in honor of Doug Jones, a long-time State Historical Society of Iowa employee who unexpectedly passed away in late 2016. It’s an easy application due this year May 1 for use anytime during the following year (starting May 15, 2023), please see the PDF attachment for more details. As an added incentive to apply, all student applicants will receive 1-year complimentary IAS student memberships – just for applying!
This research grant supports projects that advance those areas of research Doug was most passionate about, which include but are not limited to: paleoethnobotany, collaboration and consultation with tribal communities, the Underground Railroad, or other Iowa archaeology and history topics.
A portion of the award funds may be used towards conference fees to present research results. Complete details can be found at

Next month on August 25 at 7 p.m., NCSML will assemble a panel to discuss the Smithsonian exhibit "Righting a Wrong" now open at NCSML. Mark your calendars for an evening of scholarly discussion on the historical significance of Japanese American military service and Japanese American incarceration, and the lingering issues of anti-Asian racism, housing inequality, and anti-immigrant sentiment that continue to plague our society today.
