SXSW, here we come!

Next month Alice and Laurel will participate in the SXSW Festival.

They will partner with “territory “ Director Kiira Benzing and Sarah Wolozin, Director of the MIT Open Documentary Lab, to discuss aesthetic access for virtual reality.

This in-person panel will share technical innovations to produce aesthetic access for VR, from pre-production to virtual worldbuilding.

“territory” is an equitably accessible disability-centered VR experience that surrounds the user in movement, light, vibration, and sound. We are thrilled to share with SXSW attendees. If you will be at the festival, let us know!

March 9, 10-11am CT
SXSW, Austin, TX (in person)
Access: ASL & Captions

Video Description: A variety of moments from territory filming. Three dancers are filmed dancing in a large studio with bright green screen and floor. They wear copper bodysuits overlaid with shimmery black mesh and delicate filigree headpieces of copper and brass with pearl and gold beading. Alice is a multiracial Black woman with short bright orange curly hair and coffee-colored skin; @worldsoflaurel is a white person with pale skin and cropped peacock blue hair; @jerronherman is a Black man with a dark beard and blonde shortcut hair. Alice and Laurel dance in their wheelchairs.

Swiftly shifting moments: Alice spins around herself high in the air, she reaches her arms and thrashes. Laurel swings in long luxurious waves, reaching as she reaches the max of the arc. A shot of a monitor, all 3 dancers kneel and sway, wrapped in barbed wire. Close up on Jerron: he leans back, then forward, then circles his torso. Alice and Laurel kneel and fold their torsos over their laps as they hold circles of barbed wire and vibrate them against the floor. Jerron whips a long barbed wire prop at the floor, winding up then slamming the wire down, he finishes with a swirl of the prop over his head and then drops his body down. Suspended from above, Alice & Laurel spin around themselves and each other, arms curved upwards.
