Summer STEM Excursion Programs: From farms to museums we partner with our areas best informal learning environments to provide a unique and fun time. Informal learning environments are ripe with opportunity for exploration and inquiry. Before we partner with a location we make sure our foundational standards align. Here are some of our foundational standards:
1. Hands-On:
Kids sit passively in classes all day long. Fortunately, here at Active Learners we are not governed by mandated tests and confusing curriculum. Therefore we do the majority of our education through ACTIVE participation. A BIG difference from learning about something by filling out a worksheet to experiencing it out in the field! Place -based STEAM & environmental learning is almost exclusively hands-on and ACTIVE!
2. Tangible Themes:
The environment is a tangible theme that incorporates broader learning topics in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. We also base all of our classes around the current seasons, social trends and student interests. Our classes RELATE to your child on the deepest level.
3. Aligns With Interests:
The environment is consistently rated one of children’s top interest areas. This is why our summer programs are strictly place based and over 80% outside June - August! We have also created an outdoor classroom at the Coralville Kinder Club and fall field trips to local farms and orchards.
4. Fosters Achievement/Empowerment:
Classes result in a visible impact made by students which fuels inspiration and a sense of achievement. Our older students not only visit local zoos they lend a hand! We teach kids to be passionate about life and inspire them to reach for more!
