Did you know that during the school year in which a student with an IEP turns 17, the school district is responsible for providing the student and parent/guardian with a Notification of Transfer of Rights Due to Age of Majority?

This notification gives families a full year to understand and consider what will happen when the student turns 18 and reaches the age of majority.

At that time, the student generally assumes their own educational decision-making rights. However, a student may choose to delegate those rights to another person, including a parent. It’s important to know that the student can revoke that delegation at any time.

For some families, pursuing guardianship may be the right option, while others may choose a different path that supports the student’s independence and needs.

Navigating the transition to adulthood for a child with an IEP can be complex, and the decisions you make can have a lasting impact on your child’s educational rights and future.
