"You can't eat a Chromebook. Believe me, Luna has tried." — Lorraine H.

HARTWELL CREEK SCHOOL DISTRICT — Eleven dogs from households across the district were formally represented at the Aug. 31 board meeting by parent Mrs. Lorraine Hutchins, who read a statement on their behalf demanding the return of paper assignments after the district's 2024 shift to fully digital work eliminated what she described as "generations of meaningful work." Mrs. Hutchins, whose chocolate Lab, Luna, has consumed an estimated 140 worksheets since 2018, said the animals have been "sitting by idly, waiting."

Superintendent Mr. Delacroix said the district takes the concerns seriously but noted that the dogs "have not eaten a single assignment since the transition," which he characterized as "the whole point." Sophomore Emmalynne, whose beagle attended the meeting, said her excuse options have narrowed to "the Wi-Fi went out," which teachers "can just check and doesn't sound as cute."

Mrs. Hutchins confirmed the group's first demand, a return to paper for all math homework, was submitted in writing on Aug. 31 and was partially eaten in the parking lot before it could be delivered.

"I have nothing to hide." — Nolan P.

GRANITE HARBOR SCHOOL DISTRICT — A study released Sept. 2 concluded that seventh-grader Nolan had "absolutely nothing to hide" when he slammed his Chromebook shut as science teacher Mrs. Villanueva walked past his desk. The study, which consisted of a single handwritten page, was authored by Nolan and submitted to the office in a folder labeled "Official Study."

Mrs. Villanueva said the closure registered loudly enough that three nearby students also shut their laptops, and that Nolan then placed both hands flat on the lid and stared straight ahead for the remainder of the period. Technology coordinator Mr. Steinbach said the district's monitoring logs "tell a different story" but that he has been asked by Nolan to "respect the findings."

The study's methodology section reads, in full, "I asked myself and I said no," and its conclusion has been peer-reviewed by Nolan's friend Tobias, who sits next to him and was "also not looking at anything."

"Mr. Anderson lost the locker room. You can't come back from that." — Cade B.

TEXAS ROADHOME SCHOOL DISTRICT — Senior quarterback Cade announced that he has "relieved Mr. Anderson of his duties" as his Algebra II teacher, one day after the district's two-week grade check found Cade holding a 41% in the course and ruled him ineligible for Friday's game. Superintendent Mr. Pettibone confirmed the termination within the hour, calling it "a personnel matter" and noting that Cade "has the full confidence of the district."

Mr. Anderson, who was escorted from the building at 10:20 a.m. carrying a cactus and 11 years of lesson plans, said the 41% reflected "zero of six assignments turned in" and that he was "not aware students could do this." Mr. Pettibone said the district reviewed the situation "from a wins-and-losses standpoint" and determined that Mr. Anderson was "0-1 against the quarterback."

Cade's grade has been reassigned to the football team's offensive coordinator, who entered a 94% on September 3.

"We've lost 282 pencils and gained zero. It's not sustainable." — Margie D.

GRAPHITE WELLS UNIFIED SCHOOLS — A survey conducted Sept. 2 by fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Delacourt found that her room now contains 18 pencils, down from a first-day population of 300 supplied by the school's back-to-school list on Aug. 17. Of the 18 survivors, seven are shorter than two inches, four have no eraser, and one was described in the report as "mostly tooth marks."

Mrs. Delacourt said pencils appear to be leaving the room through "multiple channels," including backpacks, the floor vent, and one student, Kolbie, who has been observed leaving each day with "a visible bundle." Kolbie denied hoarding and said the pencils "just kind of end up with him."

Principal Mr. Yodel suggested Mrs. Delacourt "check the lost and found," where custodial staff have already recovered 61 pencils, all of which have since gone missing again.

"Nobody in that room asked me for a single strategic vision." — Leonard M.

COPPER VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT — Superintendent Mr. Marchetti completed a full day as a substitute teacher in a sixth-grade classroom and told reporters at Eyes On Meme afterwards that the experience had "really put things in perspective" regarding the demands of his own position. Mr. Marchetti, who earns $214,000 annually, said he spent the day "just teaching," with "no board members, no press, and no one asking me to think big."

Sixth-grader Adelynn said Mr. Marchetti read the lesson plan aloud twice, asked the class what a "bell schedule" was, and spent the 21 minutes after lunch on a phone call in the hallway that students could hear was "about a roof." Assistant Principal Mrs. Bhattacharya confirmed that a paraprofessional, Ms. Ferreira, quietly ran the room for the majority of the day and handled two nosebleeds and a fight.

Mr. Marchetti left at 2:10 p.m., 55 minutes before dismissal, citing a "budget thing," and said he would be recommending that all cabinet members try teaching for a day "to remember why we do the hard part."

"I get so much done." — Renee C.

BRIARWOOD CROSSING SCHOOL DISTRICT — Principal Mr. Haywood described the 7:15 a.m. staff meeting on September 2 as "a turning point for this building" after observing all 31 teachers typing without pause through his 40-minute presentation on the updated recess whistle protocol. Mr. Haywood said the sustained note-taking suggested staff were "finally taking procedure seriously."

District email records show 87 replies to parents left the building between 7:16 and 7:55 a.m., responding to overnight messages about a lost jacket, a lunch account showing negative $3.40, a kindergartener who "says he has no friends," and 14 separate requests to explain what a "standards-based grade" is. Fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Calloway said she also typed down the word "whistle" just for funsies.

Mr. Haywood has proposed a second meeting on Sept. 4 to "build on the momentum," and 31 teachers have marked themselves as attending.

"Cameras can be edited." — Patricia K.

SUMMIT VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT — The parents of sophomore Charlie rejected 42 seconds of hallway security footage during a Sept. 2 disciplinary meeting, maintaining that their son's account of the Aug. 31 trash can fire, in which he "was walking by and it was already like that," is the more reliable record. The footage shows Charlie extending a lit match toward the can at 8:45 a.m., pausing, and then walking away as flames become visible.

Mrs. Kessler said the footage "doesn't show what he was thinking" and that Charlie has "never lied to us, not once, that we know of." Assistant Principal Mr. Villareal offered to play the clip a second time at half speed, at which point Mrs. Kessler asked whether the school had considered that the match "could have been for something else."

The Kesslers have requested that the district amend its records to reflect Charlie's version and have asked for the camera to be reviewed for "bias."

"I told her I'm not going to hold this against her." — James L.

RIVERBEND CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLS — Seventh-grader James Lattimore, 12, formally forgave science teacher Ms. Petrakis on Sept. 2 for a 30-minute lunch detention he received for throwing a stapler across the room during a lab on Aug. 31. James said he had "taken some time to think about it" and decided that carrying a grudge "isn't who I am."

Ms. Petrakis, who confirmed the stapler struck a beaker and a almost hit a student named Cohen, said James approached her desk before class, shook her hand, and told her that "everyone makes mistakes" before returning to his seat. Principal Mr. Caputs described the exchange as "very mature in a way I can't fully explain."

James also presented Ms. Petrakis with a handwritten card reading "No hard feelings," which the school later noted was written on the back of the detention slip he had failed to have signed by a parent.

"We recommend teachers count heads and hope for the best." — Marcus D.

WINDMERE FIELDS SCHOOL DISTRICT — Beginning Aug. 31, the morning announcements at Ellsworth Junior High include a daily network forecast read by media specialist Mr. Dunleavy, who this week projected an 80% chance of full Wi-Fi collapse during the 8:05 a.m. attendance window, with "scattered outages" continuing through first period. Mr. Dunleavy said the forecast is based on 14 months of outage logs and the observation that "everything goes down the second 900 people open the same website."

Eighth-grade teacher Mrs. Skinter said the forecast has been helpful, as she now marks attendance on a sticky note and enters it "whenever the little wheel stops spinning," typically around 10:30 a.m. Superintendent Mr. Ross said a $180,000 network upgrade has been approved but is awaiting a vendor who can access the district's online purchasing portal, which has been down since Aug. 27.

The forecast has proven accurate on all four school days so far, and eighth-grader Kynzleigh said she now arrives eight minutes late "because it doesn't count anyway."

"Surviving years 7, 12, and 20-25 were the miracle"— Maureen V.

VATICAN — Pope Leo issued a formal decree from the balcony of the Apostolic Palace Friday morning declaring that any classroom teacher with 25 or more years of continuous service is now automatically eligible for canonization, with the traditional two-verified-miracles requirement waived on the grounds that "the job itself constitutes ongoing supernatural evidence." The decree, the first of its kind in Vatican history, was met with quiet weeping from the 47 veteran educators gathered below.

Mrs. Vince, a 28-year fourth-grade teacher at St. Clement's and the first American educator publicly named in the decree, stood at the front of the crowd clutching her staff lanyard. The Vatican's chief theologian Cardinal Brennan stated that the standard miracle requirement was "frankly insulting" given that the average teacher performs at least four documented miracles before lunch, citing as examples a kindergarten teacher who recently produced a working pencil from an empty drawer and a sixth-grade math teacher in Ohio who has used the same box of tissues since 2020.

The decree also provides retroactive sainthood to all teachers who completed their service before its issuance. The Vatican has also mentioned nurses being eligible very soon.
