From the jail to the lecture hall.
Today, I will sit across from women the world has written off. I’ll listen to stories marked by regret, trauma, addiction, and a hope that somehow refuses to die. Recovery is never abstract when I’m looking into the eyes of someone made in my Father’s image.
Then I’ll open my laptop, and prepare for the semester ahead at Indiana University studying clinical neuroscience. I am determined to understand the biology behind the brokenness I witness every week in private sessions, group meetings, and jailhouse conversations.
🌎Two worlds in one day.
🧠One mission.
Real people. Real pain. Real neuroscience.
I walk boldly in a calling many will never witness or understand. I do not apologize for my perseverance. I do not second-guess the path set before me.
Healing isn’t theory to me.
It has faces.
It has names.
And according to Jeremiah 29:11, it has an “expected end.”

I learned early that strength doesn’t raise its voice. It bows its head.
•My dad doesn’t just tell me to have faith…he models it.
•He doesn’t just talk about perseverance…he lives it.
•He doesn’t just believe in God’s hand…he rests in it.
Because of his example, I’ve seen what prayer can carry. I don’t doubt God’s direction. His example has built something steady in me. A confidence that doesn’t come from ego, but from watching a faithful man walk with a faithful God.
I don’t fear hard things.

Your brain does not prefer chaos because it enjoys suffering. It prefers chaos because chaos feels familiar.
If you grew up in unpredictability, high stress, or emotional instability, your nervous system adapted. It learned to scan, brace, anticipate, and react. That pattern became normal. And what’s normal feels safe even when it’s unhealthy.
Peace, on the other hand, can feel foreign. Quiet can feel suspicious. Stability can feel boring. Your brain may interpret calm as “something is about to go wrong” because it was wired for survival.
But here’s the hope:
👉🏼The brain is plastic. It can relearn peace.
You are not addicted to chaos.
You are conditioned to it.
AND CONDITIONING CAN BE CHANGED.
Save this if you’re pushing through chaos currently. Share it with a friend♥️🧠

If your habits fall apart the moment life gets stressful, this is your reminder: you’re not lazy, broken, or lacking discipline.
Stress doesn’t just make life harder, it changes how your brain functions.
When the nervous system shifts into survival mode, your brain prioritizes relief over routines. That means less energy, focus, and impulse control…even when your intentions are solid.
That’s why “trying harder” rarely works.
More rules, more pressure, and more self-shame only keep the cycle going.
Sustainable habit change doesn’t start with willpower.
It starts with regulation; helping your nervous system feel safe enough to support consistency again.
You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through this.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
If this post made you feel seen, follow along.
