WHY do I have a dozen strangers in my DM's trying to sell me something today to "fix" my social media content?
Do they think they are wooing me with that kind of flattery? π
Shaming your potential clients is not a vibe.
But also...the amount of TIME they are putting into cold messaging ain't it for them either.
I wish I could have articulated this when I started my business:
I cannot put a price on my time
..because there is no amount of money that is worth selling my attention away from my kids. It's my most precious commodity.
Once I came to understand that, my approach to building my business was changed forever.
β‘ Now, I protect my boundaries.
β‘ I give myself permission to skip tactics that make me feel sleazy.
β‘ I serve my clients in ways that also serve MY family.
ππ» And I can honestly say that it isn't about your money. ππ»
We can have authentic conversations and really get to know each other on a deep, personal level.
Because I'm not trying to sell you anything under the pretense of caring about you.
From one busy mom with trust issues to another, I genuinely want to help you build your business in a way that honors your roles as a wife and mom
..and you NEVER have to buy a single thing from me to make that happen. I would LOVE to add you to my circle.

Am I allowed to say this here??
My home is not perfect. I have 107 year old water-stained wooden floors.
And as a homemaker 1st, and a business owner 2nd, if I spent my time comparing my home to the homes on this platform, I'd never overcome my shame.
Instagram used to serve me toxicity on a silver platter. I dreaded posting for business.
Just sucked the joy right out of me. And I stopped posting for 18 months because of it.
But you know what?
Business didn't stop.
Because creating impressive content was never the key to finding my dream clients.
Connection was. Community was.
And here's what I learned. ππ»
When I stopped obsessing over what I wanted to GET out of posting content (*cough* vanity metrics)...
And started only focusing on how I can truly SERVE here, it literally changed everything.
ππ» Showing up became fun again π²...I never thought I'd be able to say that.
ππ» I finally started connecting to people I genuinely enjoy.
ππ» and I began feeling like I could be my authentic self.
And once that happens, mamas...
Once you can truly get out of your head and out of your own way...
Showing up here won't feel so overwhelming anymore. β‘
I firmly believe that as moms who are trying to make an impact, we need each other.

Yesterday I submitted a blog for a client that is probably my favorite blog I've written so far. For the sake of SEO, I linked the CDC to build ranking authority and the only note that the client gave me is that she "wouldn't change a thing except the CDC because she doesn't trust 3 letter acronyms."
My response: ok, that's totally fair.

One year ago, my life was turned upside down.Β
My husband needed to make a major pivot in his career. We wanted to create our own business together. And I wanted to write again.Β
So we crafted a plan...
Step 1: I'd go back to work for 12 months and the Professor would park his semi to come home to play Homeschool Dad.
After 9 years as a stay-at-home mom, I wanted to be as near as possible
..so I tried out a job that was a half mile from our house and completely outside of my skillset.
But I focused on the end goal: freedom.
I determined to make use of every second of that year. And I got my butt to work. Every day, I brainstormed pages of ideas and notes one spare moment at a time.
I wrote in the evenings and on the weekends. I worked with a mentor. I started taking classes and reading books about marketing. I devoured every bit of info I could get my hands on.
I wrote for trade. I wrote for free. And one day, I got my first paying client.Β
That client was exactly what I said my target client was. Which is how I found out how WRONG I was about what I wanted to write and who I wanted to write for. π€¦ββοΈ
The point is...
Starting a business is way harder than you think it's going to be.Β You have to be willing to sacrifice a lot and work harder than you ever thought you could. You have to fail...a lot. And then you have to try to do it better.
And before you know it, your year is over. It was the hardest year of my life, but I am so grateful to myself for not giving up.
So now I ask you, what do you have to show for your last year of efforts? π§

Since you can't just show up to a party uninvited, I have taken the last 2 weeks to carefully nudge myself back into this space.
I've spent the time talking to people, assessing what value I can offer that would stand out in the noise.

HOT TAKE! Not all writers make effective copywriters.
Here's a quick cheatsheet with 3 clear signs that a copywriter is EXCELLENT at their job.
π§ Intense Curiosity
This is arguably the most important indicator of their potential. It'll be easy to spot a curious copywriting candidate because they will be armed with tons of questions about your business and their blog samples will be filled with juicy research.
π₯° Deep Empathy
When you read over a candidate's sample work, look for the emotional connection to their reader. Are they selling a bunch of boring features or reminding the reader of a memory, a hope, or a desire?
A strategically written campaign leads the reader to take one important action: to buy something.
π Killer Systems
Copywriters who are efficient have impressive systems in place. Like this:
A. Maybe they work a month ahead to give the creative juices time to ripen.
B. Maybe they batch their social media content or write a month of emails on the same day every week.
C. Maybe they only take client calls after noon because they like to write in the mornings when their minds are fresh.
This is the most important conversation when I am deciding if a client is a good fit. You should know how a copywriter works - and if that works for YOUR system.
