To try out the new infrared camera, Space for All crew members David Degenhardt, Daniel Kumor and Spencer Gore imaged the University of Illinois Abbot Power Plant in below-freezing weather last night.

From this video, it's clear that the exhaust gases from coal and gas combustion -- as well as the H2O held in clouds -- emit MUCH more heat than the many miles of nitrogen and oxygen gas between us and space (the black patches in the sky). This is what makes water and carbon dioxide greenhouse gases!

Success!

Though the tallest lift the tree service could get its hands on was still 20 feet too short, a combination of poles and branch-trimming has succeeded in bringing Stephen down.

Here's a picture of what it looked like after they got it down (Stephen is A-OK, but fell down separately after an earlier attempt).

As you may have heard, Stephen is stuck in a tree! Fortunately, we've gotten in touch with the landowners and they're very receptive to us bringing out a tree service to get him down. Stay posted for our progress!

We had an incredibly successful launch (despite the cold), and Stephen Hawking is now en route to near-space! Thanks to everyone who came out to see us, and keep posted for updates on the flight and retrieval!

Launch is ON for tomorrow! It will be very cold, but only moderately windy -- be sure to bring gloves! We'll be getting things set up down on the south campus near the fab lab and greenhouses, starting at 11AM.

Since the jetstream winds are so fast this time of year, we are accelerating the flight with a smaller balloon and reduced payload mass. We'll still be flying through most of Indiana.

Space for All will be supporting two cars of people for the recovery crew, but depending on interest, we may be able to secure a third. Spots will be first-come, first-serve.
