Responsibility probably isn’t going to be learned from one really great pep talk about being responsible.

It grows through all those little everyday moments when children get the chance to practice it for themselves:

Putting something away, remembering a small job, helping take care of something, forgetting and trying again, and seeing what happens when they follow through.

And just like any other skill we teach young children, our expectations can grow along with them.

A three-year-old might be responsible for putting a set of blocks away. A five-year-old may be ready to take ownership of a small part of their morning routine or putting the forks and spoons away.

The goal is to give them something manageable enough that they can experience what it feels like to follow through, then give them plenty of opportunities to practice.

And when they forget, we get another opportunity to teach. 💛

Meet Panda Practice! 🐼📚

Yes, it’s simply a quick warm-up at the beginning of a Meadowlark Language Arts lesson, but there’s a whole lot of intentional learning packed into those few minutes.

Panda Practice is our kid-friendly take on an important part of the Orton-Gillingham approach: regular practice that helps reading and spelling skills become more automatic.

As children move through Kindergarten Language Arts, they gradually learn to:

🐼 See a letter and quickly recall its sound.

🐼 Hear a sound and know which letter or letters represent it.

🐼 Blend sounds together to read words.

We introduce these routines gradually throughout the year, giving children time to learn each one before adding more. Then we keep coming back to them as new phonograms and skills are introduced.

When recognizing a letter sound becomes more automatic, children have more mental space available for the bigger job of reading a word or understanding a sentence. The same is true for spelling. The more readily children can connect sounds to letters, the more confidently they can begin putting their ideas into writing.

And because this is Kindergarten, we wanted that purposeful practice to feel approachable and familiar.

So around here, we call it Panda Practice. 🐼💛
