Learning to read a first book should feel like reading a real story. 📚💛

That was one of the ideas behind our Meadowlark Team Readers.

In each story, the parent and child read together. Parents read the more complex text, which allows the story to have richer vocabulary, interesting plots, and plenty to talk about. Then, when the learner’s part comes up, they get to use the phonics skills they’ve been building to read their portion themselves.

It means beginning readers can experience the satisfaction of helping read an entire story while still working with text that’s carefully scaffolded for where they are.

And because the reading is shared, there’s plenty of opportunity for listening comprehension, conversation, new vocabulary, and connection along the way.

You can have the lesson ready, the supplies gathered, and a perfectly reasonable idea of how the morning will go… and then someone asks whether worms have families and suddenly we’re somewhere completely different.

That’s part of what we love about homeschooling.

We can have structure, teach intentionally, and still leave enough room for questions, tangents, laughter, and the occasional missing glue stick.

(Please tell me I’m not the only one who owns bins of craft supplies and can never find the exact one I need. 😂💛)

Young children learn by building understanding over time. A new skill is introduced, practiced, revisited, and gradually connected to everything they’ve already learned.

That’s why playful repetition and review are so important in the early years.

Your child might encounter a concept during a lesson, explore it again through play, notice it in a story, and practice it several more times before it truly becomes their own. Each experience adds another layer of understanding.

This kind of steady progression helps children build strong foundations they can continue adding to as the concepts become more complex.

At Meadowlark, we intentionally sequence skills and revisit important concepts throughout our lessons, giving children time to practice, make connections, and grow in confidence.

There is so much learning ahead. You don’t have to fit all of it into today. 🌿

Strong number sense shows up when children:
• connect numbers to real quantities
• recognize patterns
• think flexibly about numbers

These are the skills that support long-term confidence in math.

And they often show up in small, everyday moments. 💛
