Doug McGovern, also know as Alexander Gardener passed away on July 21, 2025. He will be deeply missed.

Douglas Edward McGovern, 79, was born April 15, 1946 in Schenectady, NY and died Monday, July 21, 2025. Memorial Service will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Chapel Hill United Methodist

Two days in the field, lot's of fine people, over 250 stereo pairs captured (most to be discarded in processing) and a lot of respect for all the folks involved in "The Road to Valhalla". Oh, yes, and only one tick.

Alex will (reluctantly) become Mathew Brady on April 27 to present "A "new" 3-D view of General Robert E Lee" at the Conference of the Kansas Association of Historians at Washburn University. He will be joined by the General himself (done by Norman Joy) so that they can capture images of Lee in Richmond mere days after the surrender at Appomattox.

Alexander Gardner will be presenting a program on Civil War photographic Ephemera at the Salina Civil War Roundtable on Thursday, April 4, 7:00 pm, Yesteryears Museum, 1100 W Diamond Drive, Salina, KS

Civil War Ephemera - Tintypes? Ambrotypes? Daguerreotypes? Carte de Visites? Stereo Slides? Lithographs? Drawings? These objects recorded the visual history of the years of the Civil War. Come find out what these are, how they were made, and who the artists were who produced them and where they all went.

Doug McGovern has been working with civil war photography for a number of years and will share his knowledge and collections as well as showing how such images were captured and developed.
