Hutchinson Community College will conduct a planned emergency preparedness exercise on Wednesday, September 2, at approximately 9:55 a.m.

The exercise, conducted in partnership with the Hutchinson Police Department, will include an increased police presence on campus and simulated sounds of gunfire using blanks.

If you are on or near the HutchCC main campus during this time, please know that this is only a training exercise and not an actual emergency.

The exercise is expected to last approximately 20 minutes and will involve several buildings on campus. Signs will also be posted to notify visitors that training is taking place.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation as we work with our law enforcement partners to help keep our campus community prepared and safe.

Blast from the Past - Talk about front-row seats to history! On March 4, 1960, the Hutchinson Sports Arena hosted the Kansas State Democratic Convention.

Members of the HutchCC Young Democrats Club served as event ushers, giving them the rare opportunity to meet three future iconic leaders and presidential hopefuls in a single day: Senator Hubert Humphrey, Senator John F. Kennedy, and Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. (Pictured are Humphrey and Kennedy with Kansas Governor Docking).

Just a few months later, JFK would secure the nomination—making this a unforgettable moment for our students.

Did you or a family member attend this historic event at the Arena?

HutchCC helped students save an estimated $642,600 in textbook costs during the past academic year.

The college achieved these savings by offering over 90 different courses across more than 170 class sections that required zero paid textbooks. Faculty members utilized Open Educational Resources, which provide students with free, high-quality digital learning materials. Covered subjects spanned many general education courses including English Composition, Macroeconomics, Biology, Introduction to Philosophy, and Elements of Statistics.

Textbook prices across the nation continue to create financial hurdles for many families pursuing a higher education degree. HutchCC remains committed to lowering these hidden costs to ensure local college courses remain direct, practical, and truly affordable for our community.

Blast from the Past - Dr. Elland

In the Fall of 1961, Dr. Andrew “Andy” Elland took office as our third leader, bringing with him a clear, student-first vision for higher education. He firmly believed that a community college’s greatest power lay in low costs and giving students the freedom to explore different career paths without breaking the bank.

That philosophy resonated deeply. By the Fall of 1962, HutchCC became the largest junior college in the state! Over Elland’s16-year tenure, the student population tripled, sparking an era of massive campus growth.

Dr. Elland also steered the college through one of its biggest historic milestones. In 1965, Kansas junior colleges transitioned from governance by local school districts to independent public colleges. With that shift, his title officially changed from Dean to President, a Board of Trustees was established, and the iconic stone sign along Plum Street was installed to commemorate the new era (in 1968).

To honor his incredible dedication and leadership, the Board of Trustees named the boys dormitory Elland Hall in his honor in 1968.

True to his word, Dr. Elland dedicated his career to ensuring our community had a progressive, affordable, and top-tier place to learn. He served as the leader from 1961 – 1977.
