Leadership Prompt: Learn to give advice that is potent enough to help and palatable enough they can receive it.Have you ever had to take a nasty medicine? It was so nasty you actually skipped it a few times. Conversely, have you ever had a medicine that tasted so good, but you couldn’t tell if it was working? When we are developing others we must learn the tension of giving advice that can actually help. Simultaneously, we must give it in such a way that the person we are speaking to can take it in. Here are some pointers to do this: (1) Share with someone else first, what you plan to share with the person who needs the advice. Ask for feedback: If this advice is applied, would it be helpful? Is this advice said in such a way that it can be received, or will defensive walls come up immediately? (2) People say they don’t want a compliment sandwich; they just want the info straight. That’s actually not true. Share something positive; something redeemable about the person to open and to close the meeting. (3) A day or two after you give the advice, circle back to the person and reaffirm your relationship with them and commitment to helping them. Say something like, “Hey, I just want to be sure you and I are good? I care about you.”
