While everyone is busy at the SMD Symposium learning about new tech to support the warfighter, the Huntsville Test Range was busy testing it!

It’s been a full week at HTR with an international student competition focusing on mine clearing with autonomous UAS, Remote ID tracking, UGV operations and flight testing of UAH’s Counter UAS Interceptor!

Different missions, different technologies, all happening at ONE location.

How does the Huntsville Test Range track drones in the airspace?

Situational awareness is a key component of safe and effective UAS and C-UAS operations.

The Huntsville Test Range utilizes radar and Remote ID technologies to help detect, identify, and track aircraft operating within the test area. These capabilities support flight testing, demonstrations, training, data collection, and technology evaluation across the range.

"A test range next to an airport?"

We get that question a lot.

While it may seem like an unusual location, many of the systems being developed today are intended to operate in and around complex airspace environments. Testing in a remote field doesn't always provide the same operational insights as testing in realistic conditions.

Through coordination with local air traffic control and established safety processes, the Huntsville Test Range provides a unique environment where users can evaluate technologies in conditions that more closely reflect real-world operations.

Site Spotlight: Remote Operations Center (ROC)

Located within a fenced gravel operations area, the ROC features a climate-controlled 40-foot command trailer with multiple workstations, shore power, communications infrastructure, and a TAK server to support operational awareness during test events.

With line of sight to a large portion of the range, the ROC serves as a key location for flight operations, demonstrations, and training activities. The site provides space and infrastructure for customer teams and range personnel to coordinate and support operations in the field.

What is C-UAS?

Counter-UAS (C-UAS) refers to the systems used to detect, track, identify, and mitigate unauthorized drones. Capabilities can include radar, RF detection, cameras, and interceptor systems working together to provide airspace awareness.
