At protests, mostly white crowds show how pandemic has widened racial and political divisions 05/08/2020

Does this really surprise anyone? Where were these rabid “freedom” fighters aka protesters when niños were getting polluted by a trash dump in the heart of Surf City while at school? Oh I know, not standing up for Oak View’s kids. AstroTurf constitutionalism brought to you by the City of HB.

At least we know the City of HB is consistent, it’s never been about health and safety for them.

Today is the day!

Oak View Gym Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Today!

Today will serve as the culmination of a struggle for environmental justice in a community that began 6 years ago. The School District was so proud to work with the AQMD, our pro bono attorneys, Connor, Fletcher, and Hedenkamp, the media, the Ocean View Teachers Association, local activists Oak View ComUNIDAD, and most importantly the school’s neighbors and the Oak View community, who had been been suffering in silence for decades due to governmental apathy and lack of action. Trustee Briscoe and I were proud to lead this action and today will oversee the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the new gymnasium financed by the legal settlement with Republic Trash Services. Thank you to the OVSD Board of Trustees who supported me to handle this matter, litigate, negotiate, and settle on behalf of the them, the district, and the children. Please join us today at Oak View at 5:30pm to celebrate, all are welcome!

Huntington Beach takes step toward ending ‘evergreen’ contract with trash hauler Republic 05/23/2019

City of HB votes to terminate contract with Republic Services

Last month, Mayor Erik Peterson and Mayor Pro Tem Lyn Semeta brought forth an agenda item to look at canceling the Evergreen Contract that Rainbow had negotiated for itself and enjoyed until recently. Both argued that no company should have sole lifetime rights to a contract funded by tax dollars. Gina Clayton-Tarvin, vice president of the Ocean View school board, concurred and urged the council to terminate its contract with Republic Services, like the school district did. “We vowed not to give them one more taxpayer dollar until they did the right thing and mitigated the unbearable conditions at the dumpsite,” she said. “At OVSD, we don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk and do what’s right.”

Demolition clears way for new multipurpose room at H.B.'s Oak View Elementary School 07/06/2018

It was a long hard road to clean up the dump known as Rainbow Environmental Services. It looks like it’s done and the Oak View School gym is being built. Now children will be able to eat lunch and play without being sickened by smells, dust, or birds. Great work OVSD. The community looks forward to the completion of the gym project next year.

What a display of abhorrent behavior by former Rainbow Disposal Vice President Sue Gordon. She is lying about Oak View Community member Victor Valladares and OVSD Trustee Gina Clayton-Tarvin who worked to safeguard the health and safety of 1,000 children, teachers and staff, as well as the community against an 18-acre trash dump 50 feet from the schools. When will these people from Rainbow stop their harassment? Stop the lies and defamation -Rainbow employees- you’re embarrassing Republic Services.

Here we go again! This dispute should have been over in 2016 with the settlement by OVSD and Republic Services.
