On the cusp of turning 42, I know what I want professionally and what I do not. At this point I have learned to focus on what I am best at and not waste my time going against the grain. I am learning to let go of the things I don't like, and aggressively pursue the things that I do. I have invested my time in learning new skills and have paid my dues professionally....

The beautiful straw that broke the camel’s back in my marriage was Britney Spears. Britney and I have been through some s**t together. When she shaved her head and busted the paparazzi’s car with an umbrella in 2007, I was about the same age working at UCLA. I heard the sirens and helicopters from my cubicle up the street when the ambulance took Britney to the UCLA Medical Center for her involuntary psychiatric hold back in our early twenties....

There is nothing like putting on a leotard, grabbing a coffee and heading to the barre studio to meet my mentor, Kelly Wackerman. The experience stirs in me the excitement I felt in college stretching and dancing in the most beautiful, sacred dance studio where I would spend a minimum of three hours a day for four years. I cried every day the last week of my senior year knowing that it would be impossible to spend so much time dancing like that in "the real world." I knew it would be hard, against-the-grain work to maintain the vital role of dance in my life....

One of my most challenging bartending shifts occurred on a Monday in March, starting at noon in a dark local dive bar a few blocks from the beach. I felt like I was carrying around a marine layer of numbness as I turned on the dingy lights and beer coolers. It was one of the worst hangovers of my life, and given my track record with drugs and alcohol, that is saying a lot....

Proximity in Space vs Time: 40 Miles vs 40 Years When I was 9 years old, I remember watching the outside world descend into violence and chaos as live news coverage of the LA riots played in our comfortable Huntington Beach home. It wasn't my first exposure to news or violence of course, but it was an historic moment in both the world and my psychological development....

This is my first video talking about mental health and my personal experience. In the past two years I have actively pursued therapy and a twelve step program (10 months no booze currently). My diagnoses are: ADHD (“off the charts” according to the doc), Autistic (moderate level), PTSD, bipolar with psychotic features...and wait for it, the latest, schizophrenia! I’m still Amanda and am working to first survive then thrive. God and Jesus (and Moses) are a big part of my life 🙏🏼🌸🦋

When you're watching something engrossing on television, such as the Twilight Zone-y Netflix series "Black Mirror," your attention tends to tunnel vision into that alternate world. The mess of your kitchen fades into the background as your conscious mind becomes consumed with some story line, which may or may not resurface in your thoughts as you go about your life in the coming, days, months, even years. About two weeks into quarantine, I'm finding myself alternating between moments of optimistic acceptance, and adrenaline-fueled, fight or flight feelings -- like last night, when I heard my 8-year-old daughter cough in her sleep. Before I went to bed last night, I saw a couple of videos from family and friends that they had posted of themselves dancing and singing together. [ 1,034 more word ]

Diary of a Pandemic I saw a meme on Facebook a couple of weeks ago that said "Coronavirus passes over houses with Chick-Fil-A sauce smeared on their posts." I chuckled, tagged my sister-in-law (who loves Chick-Fil-A), and moved on with my day. Looking back, this was still the humorous phase of the Coronavirus pandemic, where people in my immediate circles could laugh at memes during their normal, uninterrupted life. [ 530 more words ]
