Yesterday, we competed in Waterloo at The Rise of the Challenge 3, hosted by Miguel's Gym. It was a great show! Several out-of-state gyms came to compete. There were many great matches, and a few disappointing dirty boxing matches with moves you might see at the pro level. Using the shoulder in a clinch to hit the opponent's chin, using the forearm to the neck while shoving them into the ropes, clinching and using the top of the head to strike the chin, clinching and hip tossing—the list goes on. I've been doing this for over 20 years, and I've seen this only once before at the amateur level from a single boxer; I’ve never seen it from an entire team. I can say I’m not the only coach who will refuse future matches against this team. This is not Miguel's fault, as he, myself, and other coaches did not know this type of boxing would occur.

We went 1-1 last night. Tyler had a tough NWO/WWE wrestling match with a lot of clinching, hip tossing, push punching, and forearms to the neck, but he didn't lose by pin—he lost on points. John had a good match and ended up stopping his opponent in the second round. I am proud of both of them regardless of the outcome. Each show teaches us and helps us grow!

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the team! It was great seeing you all and talking with you. ❤️🥊

Thank you to the coaches and officials for volunteering your time to make these events happen! 🥊❤️

IT'S FIGHT WEEK!!

Tyler and John both have matches for the show! This will be John's first time fighting in his hometown, and Tyler's second time. They have been training hard and are excited to show their hard work inside the squared ropes. Come on out and support the team! We look forward to seeing familiar faces and new ones!

Our condolences go out to the Ottumwa Boxing Club, Bill Robinson's family, and friends. The old man and Uncle Patterson spoke highly of Bill as both a coach and a person, and they enjoyed his humor. They all boxed in numerous shows and tournaments together in their younger days and eventually coached at shows and tournaments together. Iowa boxing has lost another great legend.

Sending hugs and punches 🥊❤️🥊❤️

Yesterday, I attended the Annual Iowa Amateur Boxing LBC #40 meeting, where I saw many familiar faces inducted into the Iowa Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame. Greg Patterson, my coach, whom I called "Uncle Patterson," was inducted. I had the honor of accepting that award alongside his daughter and my teammate of over 15 years, my big brother, Greg Sykes.

Throughout my boxing career, Uncle Patterson set the standard for my academics and used to tell me, "In life they can take many things from you, but they cannot take your education." He is the reason I went to and graduated from college. Because of him, I believe in setting high standards for academics, which is why I include the Academy as part of the gym's name. The kids who compete do not pay a membership fee. To practice and compete, they must submit a monthly report card with a "C" average; this is their monthly gym fee.

It's an honor to say that throughout my journey, I had two great men in my corner in the ring and in life who are now inducted into the Iowa Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame. ❤️🥊

We attended the South East Des Moines boxing show, "Summer Showdown," and whoo-whee! What a showdown it was!

John had a tough opponent, and they went all out in all three rounds. It was a close match, but we didn't take home the W, and that's okay. It's John's second fight, and we are still working on building and shaping him into a boxer. This sport requires serious dedication and is considered one of the hardest and most demanding sports in the world. It takes about two years to build an amateur fighter to where they have a solid foundation on the fundamentals and even after that, you continue to develop and refine. However, there are some things a coach can't teach—heart. You either have it or you don't. John, however, has tremendous heart and that shows every time he steps into the ring. We learned from this match. So we didn't "lose". You only lose if you don't learn from it.

Congratulations to Pepe Boxing Club on your win!

We are looking at August 15 in Waterloo for our next match for John and Tyler.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported us! We appreciate you!

We look forward to seeing you all on August 15!

As always, thank you to the officials for dedicating your time so our youth can step in the ring and build their confidence, character, and boxing skills. 🥊

Thank you, to my big brother Sykes for always being in my corner in boxing and life. ❤️🥊

It's fight week!

John has a fight this Saturday in Des Moines at the Summer Showdown, hosted by the SE Des Moines Boxing Club. All the necessary information is in the flyer below for anyone who wants to come out and support.

We tried to match Tyler again, but the coach declined. Hopefully at the next show we can get him matched.

It’s been busy around here. The boys had birthdays in June and July, turning 17 and 16 — and we all know what that means: their own cars 😎 When I was 16, the old man got me a pair of mini USA Boxing gloves to hang from my rear‑view mirror. He said, “You have to have boxing gloves for your car. It’s cool!”

Twenty‑one years later, I still have them. So with the boys getting their own cars, I thought I’d pass on what the old man said was cool. I bought them each a pair of mini boxing gloves for their rear‑view mirrors 🥊.

We’ll see some of you this weekend! Thank you to those who always support — whether it’s a text message, a phone call, or your presence. We appreciate every single one of you and are grateful to have you as part of our team 🥊❤️

Happy Father's Day, old man!

The gym wouldn't be possible without everything he's taught me. It's built on the foundation he's instilled. I think he'd be proud, and we're just getting started 🥊

John received the large gym logo patch for the back of his jacket after his first fight! He also earned two academic stars for improving his grades in two classes. Now that summer break has started, John continues to attend work and train for his upcoming fight in Des Moines on July 11. Tyler also earned another academic star and continues to train for his next fight (we are still working on getting him matched and staying ready) These boys are truly embodying our gym's motto: "Home of the Pugilist Scholars." Congratulations, John and Tyler! You’ve earned it 🥊🥊

It has been quite busy these past few weekends, so we missed our 1-year anniversary on June 1. A lot of positive things have happened throughout the year. Many of you donated gloves, headgear, gym equipment, and funds to help us buy star pins for academics, embroidered name patches, and USA Flag Patches for our boxers' jackets. We also applied for our non-profit status (still waiting on approval), and we have traveled quite a bit for boxing shows.

We rely heavily on your support, from cheering us on to donating funds to help us travel to boxing shows. We are always grateful for all of you and glad to say that you are a part of our team! I know the old man and Uncle Patterson would be smiling at the year we have had and would likely say, "Way to go kid!"

Oh! And we finally put up our banner for the gym! Slowly but surely, we are growing. If there’s one thing I can take from this out of the many things I’ve learned from the old man is "Just wait. Patience is key." As the saying goes, "If you build it, they will come."

Here's to building a strong foundation for our boxers' future through the art of boxing by teaching discipline, consistency, hard work, and believing in themselves. Boxing saves lives and turns our future youth into positive powerhouses. 🥊🥊

We had to cancel practice today due to our AC unit not working. We are now back in training mode for the week! Thank you, to All Star Plumbing, Heating, and Septic for coming out and helping us stay cool! The team and I appreciate you! 🥊
