Our STEAM Lab students explored an interesting physics phenomenon using a simple propeller toy on a string. At first it seems surprising that when the propeller spins, the toy can move backward and then forward along the string, somewhat like the motion of a yo-yo.

This happens because the twisting string stores energy like a spring, while the spinning propeller pushes air backward; according to Newton’s Third Law, the air then pushes the propeller forward. As the string twists and untwists, the stored energy is released and the toy can travel back and forth along the string.

Instead of only observing the phenomenon, students applied STEAM thinking by designing and building their own propeller string toys using simple materials such as propellers, straws, strings, sticks, and rubber bands. They tested their designs and investigated how the number of twists, propeller size, and string length affect the motion.

Through this activity students engaged in science concepts of forces, motion, and energy, explored how propellers work in real technologies such as airplanes and drones, practiced engineering design and improvement, expressed creativity in their designs, and used basic measurements to analyze their results, demonstrating how hands-on exploration can make scientific ideas meaningful and memorable.

Swinging Science!

Today our students became young engineers and scientists as they designed and built their own pendulum toys using simple materials.

Through this hands-on activity, students explored the fascinating science of pendulums and gravity. After constructing their toys, they tested how their swinging animals moved back and forth and discussed why this motion happens. It was amazing to see their curiosity grow as they experimented with different lengths and designs to observe how the motion changed.

This activity connected all parts of STEAM learning:

πŸ”¬ Science – Understanding gravity and motion
πŸ›  Engineering – Designing and building a working structure
πŸ’‘ Technology – Using simple tools to create movement
🎨 Art – Decorating their swinging animals or pictures with creativity
πŸ“Š Math – Observing patterns in the swinging motion

The classroom was full of excitement as colorful monkeys, birds, and other animals started swinging like real pendulums!

Hands-on activities like this help students see that science is everywhere - even in a simple swinging toy.

We are so proud of our young innovators and their creative designs today!

Today was a special and inspiring moment for my students. They had the opportunity to watch the live launch of the Artemis mission, witnessing history in real time. Seeing the countdown and the rocket lift off was truly exciting for them.

Moments like this make science come alive. Instead of only reading about space exploration in books, students could experience the excitement of discovery and innovation as it happened.

I hope this experience encourages them to dream big, stay curious, and maybe one day become the scientists, engineers, and explorers who will take us even farther - to the Moon and beyond. πŸš€πŸŒ™

Designing the Future: Floating Modern Houses!

This week, our students at River Oaks Academy stepped into the role of engineers, architects, and innovators as they explored the Engineering Design Process (EDP) through an exciting challenge: Design and build a floating modern house just in 15min!

Throughout the project, students followed the key steps of the EDP: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Test, and Improve. They worked collaboratively to define the problem, brainstorm creative ideas, sketch their designs, and construct prototypes.

One of the most valuable parts of the experience was learning how to deal with real-world constraints. Students had to design their floating houses while managing limited time and a restricted set of materials. These constraints pushed them to think critically, adapt their plans, and develop effective problem-solving strategies.

Through this hands-on challenge, students strengthened important skills:
β€’ Creative thinking in designing unique floating homes
β€’ Critical thinking and problem solving while testing stability and buoyancy
β€’ Collaboration and communication within their design teams
β€’ Resilience and iteration by improving their prototypes after testing

STEAM Connections in the Project:
This activity integrated multiple disciplines:
β€’ Science: Students explored buoyancy, density, and balance to ensure their houses could float and remain stable on water.
β€’ Technology: They used design tools and materials strategically to build functional prototypes.
β€’ Engineering: Applying the Engineering Design Process, students designed, tested, and improved their structures.
β€’ Art: Creativity played a key role as students designed modern architectural styles and aesthetic features for their floating homes.
β€’ Mathematics: Students measured materials, calculated proportions, and considered weight distribution to optimize their designs.

Projects like this show students that innovation happens when creativity meets scientific thinking. By tackling authentic challenges, they not only learn concepts from different disciplines but also develop the mindset of future engineers, designers, and problem-solvers.

We are proud of their curiosity, teamwork, and creativity!
