*taps mic* It's been a while, but AKD is back with our 7th Annual (& 1st virtual) Career Night Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at 7PM! If you or someone you know is curious about what can be done with a sociology degree, our panel of UHCL alumni will discuss how their sociology degree has helped them in their respective careers.

Zoom fatigue is real, but this year's wonderful panelists are worth it!

Last night, AKD hosted its 6th Annual Career Night! This year's panel consisted of five incredibly accomplished UHCL Sociology alumni who have all moved on to interesting and diverse careers in government, secondary education, higher education, and law. From left to right we have Abrin Brooks, Deena Branch, Mary Moellmer, Stephen Cherry, and Audrey Ewer.

Each alum thoroughly discussed how sociology prepared and benefited them in their respective careers; some alumni even highlighted how the sociological perspective is missing in their field and desperately needs to be incorporated.

AKD would love to thank everyone who came out!

Reminder:

5 potential AKD t-shirts have been created, and the last day to vote on your favorite t-shirt design ends Wednesday, November 7th. The t-shirt with the most votes will be the design we will use to order t-shirts. Voting for a design no way obligates you to purchase a t-shirt. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. According to the Bureau of Justice, 85% of domestic violence victims are women. AKD and the Women's Studies Student Association have partnered together to host a donation drive for the Women's Center of Brazoria County. The WCBC provides shelter to women and children fleeing domestic violence in the Houston area. Last year, Hurricane Harvey destroyed many of their donations, and insurance did not cover the replacement of those items. Donations can be dropped off in Suite 2121 in the Bayou Building from October 1st through 31st. If you are unable to drop off donations to campus, but would still like to contribute, we have created an Amazon Wishlist:

On Wednesday, AKD hosted it's 3rd Annual Career Night! This year's panel consisted of three accomplished UHCL Sociology alums who have all moved on to incredibly interesting and diverse careers. From left to right we have Karina Acosta, Birdi Albritton, and Velma Laborde.

Karina formerly served as case worker at Catholic Charities; some of the cases she received involved child sexual abuse and human trafficking victims; Karina currently attends Thurgood Marshall School of Law where she is studying to become an immigration lawyer. She discussed how being a sociology major helped her easily transition into law school.

Birdi is enjoying her career as a high school teacher. She discussed how majoring in sociology allowed her to create a better connection with her 140 students. Birdi previously worked for Communities in School, an organization that is dedicated to help empower students to stay in school and achieve bright futures.

Velma currently teaches Social Structure: Class, Power, and Status as an adjunct professor at UHCL. Velma discussed how her experiences as a TA and her internship teaching in grad school had prepared her for her new career in the U.S. Department of State; she is excitingly awaiting to find out which country she will be relocated to!

AKD would love to thank everyone who came out!
