This was a video I made in 2010, 8 years after I had to quit golf because of too many back problems while playing. Still, I would take swings every now and then when giving lessons, but I would always do them slow, so that I wouldn't throw my back out.
I made this video swinging at full speed so they could see that even without practicing or working to keep a quality swing, I still had one because of something I often repeat to them. Anybody can have a great swing as long as they have decent flexibility. Once great fundamentals are established, keeping a great swing becomes fairly easy, even as one ages and loses some coordination, strength and flexibility.
I was about 215 lbs. in this video, which wasn't doing my back any favors. About two hours before making the video, I had to take a muscle relaxer, anti-inflammatory, and a pain pill so that I could get through the videos I needed to make, and hopefully not throw my back out. That night, my back locked up on me, and I was down for a couple weeks.
Any golfer can make the quality swings I made here, as long as they are in decent shape physically. Unfortunately, about 99% of all golfers don't understand or believe what I just said. As we work together, they finally start seeing that they can make any motion they like as long as they understand how to practice.
Remember what I have said in many of my videos... 99% of golfers don't practice correctly, and that is why they don't believe they can have a fantastic swing. I often tell them to try to make a liar of me. They would do that by learning how to practice correctly and then if they don't see the progress, I tell them they can have, they would've proved that what I said isn't true.
What happens virtually every time they see they are making progress they never knew they could? They make a comment like this, "I would've never believed that making progress and developing a quality swing could be done this quickly."
That is the biggest reason golfers give up on lessons. They try and try and work and work, without seeing results and so they think they just can't do it. When I show them the correct way to practice, and they start to experience the results of practicing correctly, they wonder why other sources didn't convince them of these things, years or decades ago.
I wish I could shout to every parent of a junior golfer, that it is extremely important to make sure their child learns how to practice correctly, so they establish great fundamentals they can keep for the rest of their lives.
When a junior golfer builds their swing without great fundamentals, they will put themselves in a cycle of frustration that will continue for as long as they practice incorrectly. The importance of correct fundamentals cannot be stressed enough.
