✨ A new favorite in my speech therapy toolbox!

I’ve been using the Joyreal Oral Motor Sensory Tool in my sessions, and I’m loving the additional sensory input it gives my clients! 🗣️💛

I especially like incorporating it with some of my clients with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) as a tactile cue to help increase awareness of their articulators—lips, tongue, jaw, etc.—while we work on coordinating and transitioning between speech sounds.

The vibration and different textured tips allow me to provide targeted sensory input while still keeping the focus on speech movement and sound production. ✨

It’s definitely earned a spot in my therapy bag!

✨ Why Does My SLP Do That? — Modeling Instead of “Say ___”

Ever notice your child’s SLP modeling words and phrases instead of constantly saying, “Say ___”? 👀

There’s a reason!

When I model language, I’m showing a child what functional communication can sound like in the moment—without requiring them to immediately repeat after me.

Instead of:
❌ “Say, ‘Help me.’”

I might model:
💬 “Help me!”
💬 “I need help.”
💬 “Help open!”

This helps children learn that language has meaning and purpose, while also reducing the chance that they become dependent on an adult prompting them with exactly what to say.

The goal isn’t just for a child to repeat the right words.

✨ The goal is for them to learn how to use language independently and functionally.

That’s why your SLP might say it first…and give your child the space to communicate. 💛

This may be a hot take PECs…..

I can’t speak for every therapist and I’m not saying I hate PECs but here’s why I don’t recommend using PECs when it comes to AAC.

• Not flexible for multiple functions of communication
• Not predictable- aka difficult for motor planning for the individual to learn language.

Not every late talker needs therapy. But every parent deserves more than “just wait and see.” They deserve to know what to watch for, how long to monitor, and when it’s time to seek an evaluation.

Why doesn’t my SLP have a goal for asking or answering WH questions? 🤔

Because communication develops in layers.

Before I target WH questions, I’m looking for strong foundational communication skills:
✨ Requesting what they want
✨ Asking for help
✨ Rejecting or protesting
✨ Commenting
✨ Gaining someone’s attention
✨ Making choices

If those foundational language functions aren’t in place yet, working on WH questions may not be the most functional or meaningful goal.

And here’s something that’s often overlooked: WH questions aren’t the right goal for every child. For many gestalt language processors or children who primarily communicate through echolalia, there are more developmentally appropriate goals to focus on first.

Speech therapy isn’t about checking off a list of skills—it’s about choosing the right goals at the right time for that child.

Every goal should have a purpose, and it should help the child communicate more effectively in their everyday life. 💙

Why does my SLP keep saying the same thing over and over? 🤔 There’s actually a reason.

Welcome to my new series: ‘Why Does My SLP Do That?’ 🎉

In today’s episode, I’m breaking down why your SLP might repeat the same phrase throughout a session—and how that repetition can support language learning, confidence, and communication.

Sometimes what looks repetitive is actually intentional. 💬

Save this for later and tag someone who’s ever wondered why their SLP does this! What should I explain next? 👇

Part of being a business owner is you learn how to market! I’m excited to pass out these market folders to near by daycares and ABA centers.
