Building Up Words was never just about opening a private practice. 🤎

It was about creating the kind of therapy experience I believed children and families deserved.

A place where every form of communication is valued. Where AAC is a voice. Where scripts are meaningful. Where parents are supported and included in the process. And where collaboration with BCBAs, OTs, teachers, and other professionals isn’t an afterthought—it’s part of how we help children thrive.

Because communication doesn’t always look the way we expect it to—and that doesn’t make it any less meaningful.

I wanted to create a practice where children feel heard, families feel empowered, and the professionals supporting them feel like we’re truly on the same team.

It was about creating the kind of therapy experience I believed children and families deserved.

🗣️ Why Does My SLP Do That? — AAC Edition

“Why did my SLP tell me NOT to move the icons around on my child’s AAC device?” 🤔

One big reason: motor planning! 🧠✨

When icons stay in consistent locations, AAC users can begin learning where words are—not just what the pictures look like. Over time, repeated motor patterns can make navigating the device faster and more automatic.

Think about typing on your phone 📱—you don’t have to search for every letter because your fingers have learned where they are. AAC users can develop that same familiarity with their communication system!

So while reorganizing icons might seem like it would make things “easier,” constantly changing their locations can actually make communication harder.

Becoming a better SLP has required me to unlearn, too. 💛

Earlier in my career, I thought a “good” session meant we got through all the targets, stayed at the table, had lots of trials, and checked all the boxes.

But experience has changed the way I define progress.

Sometimes the BEST therapy session looks like playing on the floor. Following a child around the room. Modeling language without expecting a response. Honoring a “no.” Accepting communication that doesn’t look the way we expect it to.

Because connection IS productive. Autonomy matters. And communication doesn’t have to look a certain way to be meaningful.

I’m still learning, still growing, and still challenging myself to ask: Am I creating a session that looks productive—or one that actually supports this child’s communication?

And those aren’t always the same thing. 💛

🔥 Hot take: I don’t think every therapy should exist in its own separate bubble.

When a child is receiving multiple services—speech, ABA, PT, OT, and more—collaboration matters. We may have different scopes of practice, but we’re supporting the same child. 🤝

I’m passionate about professionals working together while still respecting each other’s roles, knowing when something is within our scope, and—just as importantly—knowing when it’s time to refer to another professional.

Imagine stepping into a country where you don’t speak the language. Everyone is talking to you, asking you questions, and waiting for you to respond… but you don’t even fully understand what they’re saying yet. Overwhelming, right?

Now imagine being a child who is still learning how language works.

For many nonspeaking autistic children, communication can feel a lot like this. And yet, we often spend so much time asking questions and testing language instead of simply giving them language to learn from.

Before we expect a child to answer, label, request, or respond—we have to MODEL. 🗣️

✨ Narrate what’s happening.
✨ Model words and phrases without requiring repetition.
✨ Use AAC as you speak when appropriate.
✨ Give language without always expecting something in return.

Language learning shouldn’t feel like a quiz. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is stop asking, “What is this?” and start saying, “Look! It’s a big red truck!” 🚗💬

Give them language before expecting them to give language back. 🤍
