A kid who has a choice to read a book will read it over and over. Having them underline, highlight and taking notes, is test prep.
Kids love to read when given the opportunity to choose from books in a library.
Closing the doors and not allowing them to choose is blocking imagination and critical thinking.

Parents, when you are on a school tour, ask to see the library. Ask when are they allowed to check out books or do research.
I was sitting in the back of a library when no one asked and just assumed that the library was open.
But on a normal day, the lights are off and door is locked.
Books on a shelf is not a functional library.

I saw this posted on fb and thought it might be of interest to the HASL FB group:
The TLA Public Relations and Marketing Committee is developing the Libraries Transform Texas public advocacy campaign, which focuses on sharing why libraries are essential. They are looking for stories from librarians and library supporters to highlight how their libraries support and transform their communities.
The committee is inviting Teacher Day@TLA participants to share their experiences of how the teacher/librarian partnership contributes to their students’ success. Your stories will help highlight the transformative power of libraries, especially in the school setting.
They are asking for attendees to sign up for a 15-minute time slot on Wednesday, April 17 to record a 2-3 minute video testimonial or interview about their library. No need to worry about what exactly to say on camera! They will send questions in advance to help librarians talk with their teachers about their libraries on camera, and TLA staff and a professional videographer will be facilitating interviews, as well. Videos may be posted on the Libraries Transform Texas webpage and social media feeds.
If you are interested in sharing your experiences for this powerful campaign, please consider signing up here.
If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Woodland at [email protected] .
We look forward to seeing you in April!
