This beautiful picture book, Odder: An Otter’s Story, contains a perfect quote about teaching and loving. Thank you for this beautiful story, Katherine Applegate!

I just began reading this book, Primal Intelligence, today. Already it speaks to me and to everything we believe in Abydos. Check out this paragraph that I’ve highlighted. Our brains learn learns through story. That’s something we have always believed in Abydos.

Dear Abydos community,

Joyce and Eddie chose not to hold a formal memorial service.

Instead, there will be a celebration of Eddie’s life held during the annual Abydos conference in November, where the community he helped build can gather, remember, and reflect together. More details will be shared as the conference approaches.

Those who wish to contribute photos of Eddie are invited to email them to Terrie Roberts at [email protected].

For those who would like to honor Eddie’s memory through a charitable contribution, Joyce has shared that St. Jude’s is their charity of choice.

We are grateful for your continued care, respect, and patience as Joyce navigates this loss in her own way.

With appreciation,
Margaret and Terrie

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Edward Wilson—our beloved Eddie of JoyceandEddie—passed away peacefully at home on December 27.

Eddie was a driving force in the Abydos community. As co-director of NJWPT/Abydos alongside his wife, Dr. Joyce Armstrong Carroll, he helped shape the vision, direction, and intellectual spine of the work for decades. He was generous with his ideas, fiercely creative, and possessed a sharp, unforgettable wit. Eddie challenged people to think differently, to take literacy seriously, and to never settle for easy answers. What he did—and what he stood for—continue to matter.

His wife of 45 years, Joyce Armstrong Carroll, has asked that we allow her time to grieve this profound loss in her own way, and in peace and silence. She also invites us to take time to remember Eddie—to reflect on the work he built, the ideas he pushed forward, and the legacy he leaves behind.

More information will be shared as it becomes available. Until then, we hold Joyce and Eddie’s family close in our thoughts, and we honor Eddie by continuing the work he helped create.

With respect and gratitude,
Margaret and Terrie
