Get ready for tonight’s world-premiere of How I Learned to Play Tennis by getting to know the director, Philip Kershaw.
Philip graduated with his MFA from the School of Theatre and Dance in the spring of 2020, shortly before returning to SOTD to teach acting. Before the end of the year, he was approached by Dr. Robert Shimko, Director of the School of Theatre and Dance, about directing How I Learned to Play Tennis.
Philip read the initial draft of Tennis back in May, and says that while the initial story was great, it’s only continued to evolve thanks to the collaborative work of the entire cast and crew.

Meet comfort ifeoma katchy, writer of How I Learned to Play Tennis, and senior Playwriting/Dramaturgy major at the UH School of Theatre and Dance.
comfort began writing Tennis while attending a playwriting workshop in 2020, where, over the summer, she would get her friends together to help workshop the play.
As a playwright, comfort believes that theatre works best when you lead with your collaborative spirit, allowing the story you’ve written to become its own entity as it’s opened up to the creative contributions of an entire cast and crew.
