Last night I was getting ready to start an IV on a patient who had already been poked multiple times. I came in, introduced myself, and started looking for a place to start the IV. At one point, the patient told me she used to be a nurse. She was retired now. She quickly apologized and said she didn’t mean to add pressure.

I joked that I was glad she told me because nurses have really thick skin.

It got me thinking — does knowing someone is in healthcare (maybe they’re a doctor or a nurse) add to the pressure or decrease the pressure of taking care of them? Let me know your thoughts down below.
