Next up in our spotlight series is Dr. Evelyn Granville.

In 1949, Dr. Granville earned her Ph.D in mathematics from Yale University. She was the second Black woman in America to earn a doctoral degree. When she started her career, she moved from being a research assistant to working for the National Bureau of Standards where she used her math skills to help develop missile fuses.

By 1956, she had joined IBM where her career shifted towards the American space program. IBM contracted for NASA where Dr. Granville designed computer software that helped analyze satellite orbits for the Project Mercury missions.

By the late 60s, Dr. Granville returned to education where she spent the rest of her career instilling a love for math to elementary students. She remains a fierce advocate for STEM education.

The next installment in our spotlight series is Dr. Chieko Asakawa.

After a swimming accident damaged her optic nerves, Asakawa lost her sight at the age of 14. At that time, there were no assistive technologies for the visually impaired, but Asakawa was going to change everything for the better.

Over the course of her distinguished career, Dr. Asakawa has invented numerous technologies to make the visually impaired more independent. Some of her work includes voice browsing, braille systems for the Internet, voice-controlled navigation tools, and an AI-powered robotic suitcase.

In 2013, the Japanese government awarded her the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon for her contributions to accessibility research.
