How Much Do You Love Yourself? 12/01/2017

I have a friend who occasionally says, “I may not be much, but I’m all I ever think about.” He says that the phrase isn't original with him. He heard it from a friend of his. Regardless of where the statement originated, I’ve always found it to be hauntingly personal. If it was possible for someone to read my thoughts every minute of the day, I wonder how often I would be thinking about myself. [ 346 more words ]

Lessons from a Frog about Resolving Conflict 10/27/2017

While attending a book fair at my granddaughter’s elementary school, not only did I get to see my granddaughter’s second-grade classroom, but I was also able to visit the class where she attended first grade the previous year. While I was visiting with my granddaughter’s first-grade teacher, I noticed a large poster on the wall with large letters entitled, Kelso the Frog - It's Your Choice… [ 412 more words ]

When You Get Squeezed, Do You Like What Comes Out? 10/17/2017

It’s a scientific fact that when you remove the cap from a tube containing an ingredient and squeeze the tube, whatever is inside the tube will come out. You wouldn’t expect to squeeze a tube of toothpaste and get glue. People are similar to a tube that has been squeezed. Whatever is in them will come out whenever they are compressed by enough pressure. [ 322 more words ]

Why Self-Service is Really No-Service 10/06/2017

I recently noticed that two of the tires on my automobile needed air and I drove to the neighborhood gas station to put some air in the tires. When I arrived at the gas station property, I drove to a free-standing tall free-standing silver box with the words “Air and Water” written in bold black letters on the top of the box. How to Face a Storm 08/26/2017

As I write this article from my home in Houston, Texas. I’m keeping one eye on my computer screen and my other eye on the television as I watch a swirling mass of weather in the Gulf of Mexico called Hurricane Harvey. Most of the weather forecasters are saying that they are very confident they know where the storm will make landfall. [ 444 more words ]

Why Conversation is Breaking Down in Society 08/21/2017

Unless you have been on a secluded beach in the Polynesian Islands for the past year, you are probably aware of the problem we are currently experiencing in the United States, as well as in the workplace and even our families. Conversation is quickly becoming a lost art. I’m not referring to the simple exchange of ideas between two people or an attempt to convince someone that your opinion is the fountain head of wisdom and knowledge. [ 358 more words ]

Are You Paying Attention to What You’re Doing? 07/28/2017

As the 21st century has exploded into our lives, hurry, anxiety, and agitation has become a regular way of life for many people. The word that can be used to describe the sign of the times is multitasking. Originally, this term was used to describe the parallel processing abilities of computers. However, it’s now a word that is often used to describe our attempt to do as many things as possible all at once. [ 278 more words ]

Should You Wait for Success? 07/24/2017

In 1986, the H.J. Heinz Company ran an ad campaign that featured people in somewhat hurried situations waiting for their Heinz® Tomato Ketchup. The advertisement tagline was, “The best things come to those who wait.” The overarching theme was that the thick and rich ketchup was worth the wait and people didn’t mind waiting for it. You’ve probably heard someone describe something as being “worth the wait.” Not only is this statement generally true, it’s also scientifically accurate. [ 330 more words ]

Do You Speak Honestly with Others? 07/16/2017

Has someone recently spoken to you and preceded their statement with the phrase, “To be honest”? Perhaps it sounded something like this, “To be honest, I really don’t drink coffee after 5:00 pm because it keeps me awake at night.” There’s a good chance that you hear someone say this to you more than once a day. I hear this statement several times a day when others are speaking to me, when I’m listening to a newscast on radio or television and when I’m listening to a conversation between other people.
