✈️From Houston to Tokyo: Helen's Summer of a Lifetime
What happens when a high school student says "yes" to a new adventure?
For Helen R., the answer was an unforgettable month studying abroad in Tokyo, Japan.
As a DiscoverU student preparing to enter her senior year of high school, Helen took advantage of an opportunity to explore the world through CIEE Study Abroad, one of DiscoverU's study abroad partners.
Instead of spending her summer at home, she immersed herself in Japanese culture while taking language classes at Sophia University. Over the course of the month, Helen experienced what it was like to live, learn, and explore in Japan. She practiced speaking Japanese, sampled new foods, navigated Tokyo's public transportation, and formed friendships with students from around the world. Her journey also took her beyond Tokyo to places like Minato, Taito City, Chichibu, and other surrounding communities, where every destination offered a new perspective on Japanese life and culture.
Studying abroad isn't just about visiting a new country—it's about building confidence, embracing new challenges, and discovering how much bigger the world really is. Those lessons can't be found in a textbook.
