Servant Leadership - Does it really work?

Leadership is a very "deep" subject and I will only give you my “tip of the iceberg” thoughts on the subject. If you really want to know how to be the best leader of men, you have only one place to look: the Bible. God Himself set for us an example to follow. Wouldn’t you know it is the exact opposite of what man wants to do? Do tell…

Men seek power over others, and riches. God said for us to serve others and help those in need. When it comes down to the bottom line, the servant style leader has the most influence and power over the one who thinks being a leader is to dominate and dictate.

Bad leaders use fear to intimidate to get results and demand to be served by those they lead; good leaders use service to influence to get results and seek to be of service to those they lead.

Here are some good leadership keys.

1. Never ask someone to do something that you are not willing to DO or have not done yourself. Do the hard, distasteful, or dangerous jobs yourself first or with them together. Lead by example. Don't put yourself above them or their tasks. If your followers know your willing to do it, they will be happy to do for you. Lead by example.

2. Develop and protect, TRUST in the team. Trust is the core of human relationships. Without it, the team does not exist. With it, you can do more than what you can imagine.

3. The Leader has to KNOW. The leader has to know what he/she is doing. This could mean even technical or big-picture knowledge.

You must really know your stuff! You also have to know your team members. You must never put your team in a position where they are operating outside their capabilities.

4. The Leader has to BE. Nobody wants to follow someone who is just like themselves. A leader has to look the part, act the part, and live by different and higher ethical standards than the team. People want someone to whom they can look up too.

5. The leader has to DO. The leader has to be action-oriented, quick thinking, able to adapt, and willing to work. They have to help coach their subordinates and help them grow in their skill and knowledge to become better leaders themselves.

A good leader ALWAYS puts the team members’ well being first, before taking care of themselves. This simple act develops trust; trust leads to influence, and influence leads to respect, driven from the trust developed by a servant leader’s acts of selfless service to the team members. A good leader uses their position power to open doors, to provide more tools and resources for their followers to use, that helps them do their job. They protect their followers from those that would abuse them and they earn the respect of their followers by their actions and integrity.

Contrast this with a bad leader, who takes all the “privileges of office” that a person in power can take and looks down on their followers. A bad leader does not want to get his/her hands dirty or help with the hard or distasteful tasks. They are the ones who like to bark orders, and have to use negative threats and force to motivate his/her followers into action - using fear or intimidation as their main motivating agent. Bad leaders think that they are better than their followers, smarter, and they expect others to serve them because of their position or title, they demand respect.

Which type of leader would you want to work for? Which type of leader are you?

Now, I know there are times where other three leadership styles must be used based on the situation and the readiness level of the follower. This is called Situational Leadership, and if your serious about being the best leader you can be, studying Situational Leadership is a must. There are many other books that will teach and explain this process to you in much better detail so I will let you find and read them.

I can recommend another book called Army Leadership, serving as an Infantry Officer for over a decade, I can vouch for the fact that the military knows a thing or two about real leadership skills. Leadership Secrets of General Patton is one of my favorites.

Be a servant to your fellow man, your team, your family, and you will be their leader, they will gladly follow.
