A mom reached out for emergency tutoring before her daughter's summer school test, and we got her into a same-day session with Ms. Alexis. This morning, she wrote to tell us her girl walked in feeling confident and comfortable.

This is our amazing tutor Shannon working with one of our Mathletes using the TIBO method we posted earlier this week.

This division method changed the game for so many of our students 🎯

We know, We know… “another way to do math?” But hear us out.

The box method isn’t replacing what you learned. It’s just a more organized way to see the SAME steps:
◉ Divide ÷
◉ Multiply ×
◉ Subtract -
◉ Bring it UP ↑ (instead of down)
◉ Repeat until done
◉ Remainder r

The difference? Students can actually SEE where each step goes. No more numbers running off the page. No more losing track of what comes next.
If your child already knows long division, they already know this. We’re just organizing it differently.

Our Mathletes are deep in division review right now so we’re bringing this one back! 🔁

Partial quotient division is one of our favorite methods to teach because it builds number sense AND connects multiplication to division in a way that just clicks.

Here’s the breakdown:

1️⃣ Set up your t chart with the divisor on one side and multiples of 1, 10, 100, 50. These are easy for students to compute once they recognize the pattern.

2️⃣ Identify the largest number possible from the chart to subtract from the dividend.

3️⃣ Multiply the divisor by your partial quotient and subtract the result from the dividend.

4️⃣ Repeat with the new dividend until you reach zero or a number smaller than the divisor.

5️⃣ Add up all your partial quotients to find the final answer.

We know the standard algorithm is faster but when students are first connecting multiplication to division this method helps them actually understand what’s happening.

That understanding is what sticks!
